VOC arrival in the heart of Amsterdam

VOC arrival in the heart of Amsterdam
Made by B℮n
The Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC in old-spelling Dutch, was established in 1602, when the States-General of the Netherlands granted it a 21-year monopoly to carry out colonial activities in Asia. It was the first multinational corporation in the world and the first company to issue stock. In addition, the VOC possessed quasi-governmental powers, including the ability to wage war, negotiate treaties, coin money, and establish colonies. By 1669, the VOC was the richest private company the world had ever seen, with over 150 merchant ships, 40 warships, 50,000 employees, a private army of 10,000 soldiers, and a dividend payment of 40%. Over grenzen heen kijken. Dynamiek! Toch?

Are you ready? A total lunar eclipse will take place on Thursday, February 21, 2008 (and Wednesday evening, February 20), the first of two lunar eclipses in 2008, and the only total eclipse. The next total lunar eclipse will not occur until December 21, 2010! Total Lunar Eclipse time @ 04:26 AM CET. I hope the weather keeps as clear as today. Check out the NASA website for details. The Montelbaans tower build in 1516 and behind the tower the Southern church of Amsterdam. Photo taken from Nieuwe centrale bibliotheek - new library of Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Cityscape and architecture Amsterdam fans out south from the Amsterdam Centraal railway station. The Damrak is the main street and leads into the street Rokin. The oldest area of the town is known as de Wallen (the quays). It lies to the east of Damrak and contains the city's famous red light district. To the south of de Wallen is the old Jewish quarter of Waterlooplein. The 17th century girdle of concentric canals, known as the Grachtengordel, embraces the heart of the city where homes have interesting gables. Beyond the Grachtengordel are the former working class areas of Jordaan and de Pijp. The Museumplein with the city's major museums, the Vondelpark, a 19th century park named after the Dutch writer Joost van den Vondel, and the Plantage neighbourhood, with the zoo, are also located outside the Grachtengordel. Several parts of the city and the surrounding urban area are polders. This can be recognized by the suffix -meer which means lake, as in Aalsmeer, Bijlmermeer, Haarlemmermeer, and Watergraafsmeer. The old city centre is the focal point of all the architectural styles before the end of the 19th century. Jugendstil and Art Deco are mostly found outside the city’s centre in the neighbourhoods built in the early 20th century, although there are also some striking examples of these styles in the city centre. Most historic buildings in the city centre and nearby are houses, such as the famous merchants' houses lining the canals. Amsterdam without bicycles? Unthinkable!....

A few of the funny things about Amsterdam bicycles I wanted to point out -Formally Dressed Bicyclists! A whole set of Amsterdam bicyclists can be seen dressed very formally, like suit and tie for men, and dresses for women. -With or without any extra seats or foot-pegs for the extra riders, you will see 1 or 2 or even 3 extra passengers side-saddle, balancing precariously, standing, sitting, whatever it takes so they can hitch a ride with a buddy or parent. -No Helmets EVER . In all of Amsterdam there is not one bicycle helmet found anywhere in the city. Not ONE!! I think any reasonable person must come to the conclusion that either the people in Netherlands do not value the safety of their children, or bicyclists in other countries are clumsy pansies with soft heads and weak minds that must be protected from hurting themselves no matter how much it infringes on individual rights. -Dogs on Bikes. Amsterdam bicyclists seem to commonly bring their furry friends along with them on the bicycle rides. I think that's nice. -Spectacular Gigantic Unbreakable Security Chains. Almost all of the bicycles in Amsterdam are what I would call beaters, which means they are beaten up, scraped, bent, out of tune, and have bad paint jobs. At the same time, all these beaters have these GIGANTIC security chains that look like they should be the chain on the anchor of an oil tanker ship. The ton of high tensile, military hardened steel in each security chain must be worth more than the bicycle it is keeping safe! The only other type of bicycle lock was a type of sliding circular rear wheel lock that was once sold in my country (I owned one when I was 10 years old).

Herman Brood ( Zwolle, November 5, 1946 – Amsterdam, July 11, 2001) was a Dutch musician, painter and media personality. Brood was the Dutch personification of sex, drugs and rock 'n roll. In the 1990s he took up painting and became as successful as a painter as he was as a musician. The work of Herman Brood continues to have a significant impact on new generations of Dutch painters, as well as street and public artists. When, in 2001, he found out that he had only a few months left to live, Herman took matters into his own hands and, depressed by the failure of his drug rehabilitation programme, committed suicide on July 11 by jumping from the roof of the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel at the age of 54. Photo taken in the public Library of Amsterdam on the 6th floor where you can find more art of Herman Brood.

I just love Amsterdam at night. Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country. The city, which had a population of 1.36 million on 1 January 2008, comprises the northern part of the Randstad, the sixth-largest metropolitan area in Europe, with a population of around 6.7 million. Its name is derived from Amstellerdam, indicative of the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel. Settled as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age, a result of its innovative developments in trade. During that time, the city was the leading centre for finance and diamonds. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded, and many new neighborhoods and suburbs were formed. The city is the financial and cultural capital of the Netherlands. Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters there, and 7 of the world's top 500 companies, including Philips and ING, are based in the city. The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, the oldest stock exchange in the world, is located in the city centre. Amsterdam's main attractions, including its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, Anne Frank House, its red-light district, and its many cannabis coffee shops draw more than 3.66 million international visitors annually.

This is a shot of the Sint Nicolaaskerk (Church of St. Nicholas) in the heart of Amsterdam, taken from the bridge connecting the Nemo building with the central train station of Amsterdam. Officially the church was called St. Nicholas inside the Walls, i.e. the oldest part of the Amsterdam defence works. The facade is crowned by two towers with a rose window in between. The centre of this window is formed by a bas relief depicting Christ and the four Evangelists, made in the Van den Bossche and Crevels workshop in 1886. A sculpture of the patron saint of both the church and the city of Amsterdam was placed in a niche in the upper section of the gable top. The well-known sculptor Bart van Hove (1850-1914) made the sculpture in 1886. The crossing is articulated by a large octagonal tower with a baroque dome and lantern and crowned by a cross. The basis of the ground plan is the scheme of the classic three-aisled cross-basilica, i.e. a nave, two aisles and a single transept. The choir is located as is usual, at the end of the nave. In the corners formed by the transept and the nave, two chapels are located, traditionally devoted to Mary and Joseph. Inside the newly renovated church, a 19th century Sauer Organ can be found, on which concerts are given and mass is accompanied. The church is still a very active parish, which serves the city centre. It boasts 3 choirs, 2 of which sing choral evensongs every Saturday at 5pm.

Please take your time... to View it large on black The Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge) is a bridge over the river Amstel in the city centre of Amsterdam. The Magere Brug is a bascule bridge made of white painted wood. It was built in 1670 and broadened in 1871. The last major renovation was done in 1969. Since 2003, only pedestrians and cyclists are allowed to use the bridge. Many times a day it is opened in order to let ships pass; the boats used for sightseeing tours are low enough to pass underneath the bridge when closed. The bridge is decorated with 1200 light bulbs that are turned on in the evening. Best view on the skinny bridge is from the Blauw bridge.

The Westerkerk (western church) is a Protestant church in Amsterdam, built in 1620-1631 after a design by Hendrick de Keyser. The church is in Amsterdam's Jordaan district, at the bank of the Prinsengracht canal. The spire is the highest church tower in Amsterdam, at 85 meters (279 feet). The crown topping the spire is the Emperor's Crown of Maximilian I. Rembrandt van Rijn was buried in the Westerkerk on October 8, 1669. Quite amazing I could find my house viewing from the rooftop balcony of the public Library of Amsterdam. Please checkout the note on the image to find out where I live :-) next to the two piramides.

Atlas is an icon in Greek mythology and commonly used in western culture, as a symbol of strength or stoic endurance. He is supporting an enormous round globe on his back and shoulders. The globe originally represented the celestial sphere of ancient astronomy, rather than the earth. The use of the term atlas as a name for collections of terrestrial maps and the modern understanding of the earth. Atlas stands on the Royal Palace at the Dam in Amsterdam. In former days to children it was told that as if Atlas let the ball fall, Amsterdam would go down under! Photo of Altas taken at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam with a partial Eclipse when Earth and Moon are nearly in a straight line created in PS. The light of the partial Eclipse (Ancient Greek from verb, I cease to exist, combined with, I am absent) strikes Atlas the symbol of strength, carrying the world on his shoulder.

My contact list photo's got many Flickr hiccups... grrrr ...I'm off to the Library Here you can find a script for the bug: The new central library of Amsterdam has annually at least 2.5 million visitors. People searching for information, culture, communication and education. Not only books nowadays also more than 100 internet terminals. 2.5 million visitors per year, average 7,000 per day. It reflects the importance of the public library Amsterdam for the city and the region. Art of Herman Brood can be found on the walls of the library. Allthough it's a new building there is a cosy atmosphere. An easy place to relax and enjoy the treasures with each book.

The Royal Palace in Amsterdam is one of three palaces in the Netherlands which is at the disposal of Queen Beatrix by Act of Parliament. It is situated in the west side of Dam Square in the centre of Amsterdam. It was built by Jacob van Campen, who took control of the construction project in 1648, as the Town Hall for the City of Amsterdam, and was built on 13,659 wooden piles and cost 8,5 million gulden. Jacob van Campen was inspired by Roman administrative palaces. He drew inspiration from the public buildings of Rome. Yesterday it was a busy Sunday afternoon and this Dutch painter was painting our Royal Palace. Gerrit Adriaensz Berckheyde did paint it too way back in 1673. Not much has changed since then even the clouds look the same except maybe the horses were replaced by the bikes of today. Waterlooplein is a square in the centre of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, near the Amstel river. The daily flea market on the square is popular with tourists. On the right side the Mozes en Aäronkerk church. The big building is now the Jewish Historical Museum, a former Synagogue, dedicated to Jewish history, culture and religion, in the Netherlands and worldwide. The most remarkable aspect of the synagogue is its magnificent central glass dome dedicated on 25 March 1752. Photo taken in the Jewish Historical Museum.

The Oudezijds Achterburgwal is a street canal in the center of Amsterdam. The bridge between the OZ Voorburgwal Old Street and Oude Hoogstraat is a clear dividing line between the noisy northern wall part and the quiet southern part. The northern part is full of sex shops, prostitutes window, peepshows, brothels, coffee shops and pubs. The Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum is located on the northern part of the OZ Achterburgwal. In the southern part are more buildings like the University of Amsterdam, as well the Inside Hospital and Oudemanhuispoort. The OZ Achterburgwal was refurbished in 2006 by the city of Amsterdam. The municipality announced in December 2007 that the window prostitution in the Red Light will be drastically reduced. The number of windows on the OZ Achterburgwal will be further reduced by properties to purchase. The OZ Achterburgwal side alleys is one of the few areas where window prostitution will not entirely disappear.

Thanks for all the continued comments! Here are your TOP pics: . Thanks again! This looks nice: Kiev is a cold place in the winter. I can't for the life of me figure out why the Germans chose to invade these old Russian cities in the winter months. They say the Russians had some significant success because they initially did not depend on tanks, which are not great in the snow, but instead relied on horse-cavalry. All of this ultimately made me think that the only thing worse than being a German soldier during a Kiev winter would be being a Russian horse. Over on the right there, you can see the huge statue celebrating the Great Patriotic War, which we know as WWII. I am headed to Iceland in a few hours to hang out with Asmundur - I can't wait! I also took a few interesting shots here in Amsterdam, but I've had no time to process them.... coming soon!

We had sail in yesterday and I decided to take my bike and cycle about 25 km (there where to many traffic jams). There where really a lot of people there, on the shore and on the water. There where so many boats there that they where fighting to get a good spot and the people on the shore drew the short stick unfortunately, so I decide to go to the center of Amsterdam where I climbed a bus booth and I got this shot. …………………………………………………… Camera: Canon EOS 5D MarkII Exposure: sec 1/1000 Aperture: f/ 13.0 Focal Length: 180mm ISO Speed: 400 All invites, notes and tags are welcome
