Karlovy Vary listen (helpinfo) (German: Karlsbad), also known in English as Carlsbad, is a spa city situated in the western part of the Czech Republic on the confluence of the Ohre and Tepl rivers. Karlovy Vary is named after Emperor Charles IV, who founded the city in the 1370s. It is historically famous for its hot springs (13 main springs, about 300 smaller springs, and the warm-water Tepl River).
Karlovy Vary is a picturesque spa town ("Karlovy Vary" or "Carlsbad" means "Karl's Bath"), featuring colorful and whimsical architecture. Simply walking the streets can be a treat.
The town, along with , was the filming location of many scenes identified as being in in the 2006 movie .

Mill Colonnade (1871 – 1881, Josef Zítek) Architect Zítek’s original vision of the appearance of this new renaissance building differed from its final look substantially. The renowned architect initially designed the building as a two-storey, much more ostentatious structure. Once finished, the colonnade was not received with the warmest feelings and appreciation. Purportedly, it was not in tune with the nature of the spa city. Since 1893, when it was extended to the Rock Spring (Skalní pramen), it has been 132 m long. Its roof supported by 124 Corinth-style columns shelter an orchestra pit and five mineral springs. Its premises are decorated with allegoric statues. For over 200 years, people have traveled to Carlsbad to “take the waters” at its 13 hot springs. Actually drinking the water must be an acquired taste, so I decided to try the pool at the 1960s Hotel Thermal, built to accommodate Russians seeking vacation destinations behind the Iron Curtain. However, these Eastern European ladies were made of tougher stuff than me, casually paddling around in 8° C weather - I caught a cold no amount of Becherovka could cure.
