Königsberg Cathedral

Kaliningrad (Russian: Kaliningra'd), until 1945 known by its German name K�nigsberg, then briefly as Kyonigsberg (Kionigsberg), is a seaport and the administrative center of Kaliningrad Oblast, the Russian exclave between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic Sea. As of the 2002 Census, its population was 430,003.

Before 1917, Christmas was celebrated in Russia in much the same way as it was in the rest of the world: on December 25, with Christmas trees and Christmas gifts, Saint Nicholas and the like. During the years of Communism after 1917, all formerly Christmas traditions were transferred to New Year's Eve, which became the traditional winter holiday. New Year's Eve is now to Russians what Christmas is to most people in the rest of the world, with one exception: there is no remnant of Christianity in the holiday. New Year's Eve is simply a chance to celebrate, to bring in the new year and get rid of the old. It is a chance to exchange gifts, have a day off and enjoy oneself. Christmas is once again celebrated in Russia, but not near to the extent it once was. All the traditions have been firmly settled in New Year's, and very few people take advantage of the new freedom to celebrate Christmas as they wish. The Russian Orthodox Church has made Christmas an official holiday, but it is celebrated on January 7th. A few Russians have begun to celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December.

Photo was captured from another photograph on the wall of my hotel room in Kaliningrad. It was really impressed me but I long time did not decided to publish it cause this image is not completely mine - I have no idea who is the author and when the photo was done. Only thing I have found - the steam ship Egeran displayed was build in 1900 and has carried this name from 1931 to 1938 and this could date the image. The destiny of the ship is tragic - it was disappeared at sea after passing the Elbe LH on the 10th February 1938 when on route from Hamburg for Rotterdam with a cargo of grain. www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?152531


Church of Cross

Kreuzkirche (Church of Cross). Built in 1933. This church had survived in English bombardment of Koenigsberg in 1944 and attack on the city in 1945. Only the southern tower (the right one on the photo) was damaged. After the war the church room was used as art studio, later as a factory. A fire destroyed the church substantially. Different repairs were accomplished. In 1988 the church was handed to orthodox municipality. Today is an Orthodox church.

Königsberg was the capital of Germany's easternmost province until 1945, bordering on Lithuania and the Soviet Union. In 1945 it was renamed Kaliningrad, became part of the Soviet Union and it is now the capital of a a Russian oblast landlocked between Poland, the Ukraine, Lithuania and the Baltic sea. The Cathedral was about the only pre-WW2 builiding in central Königsberg to survive the massive Russian bombing in 1945.
