February 11, 2009 - This is the laundry and storage area for about 8 apartments - 4 washers and 4 dryers. Most of it works most of the time. Today was a really busy day in here, and it was hard to get a machine. The storage room (to the right of this photo) does not have enough space for our suitcases, etc. It is completely unorganized and looks as if things have been shoved in there and forgotten. Most things aren't labeled, so who knows if these things even belong to anyone who lives here?

November 11, 2009 - I have been learning new ways to get around; mainly ways that avoid, as much as possible, The Hill. Lately, I've been shopping in Ortaköy, about a 30 minute walk away. Groceries are a little cheaper than they are in Arnavutköy, and there are more shops there. But best of all, I can take a bus uphill. This is part of the walk from the bus stop to the campus. I'll put some notes on the pic.

This is from the same concert as the previous photo (Grup Gündoğarken). These kids danced non-stop beginning with the warm-up canned music straight through the end of the concert. We adults just wiggled in our seats, clapped our hands, and sang non-stop! Yes, that is the moon at the top of the photo and the twinkling lights below the moon are a continent away in Asia. We live in a magical city.

February 25, 2009 - Scrub, scrub, scrub. It's kitchen-cleaning day. The best part was under the sink (I should have taken a picture)! What do you do with all those plastic bags? I carry a canvas bag to the market, but the plastic still piles up. I have two containers for plastic bags- one for sizes that fit in trash cans and one for designer sizes - big, small, depending on the need.

February 18, 2009 - Remember this from the last 365? Take a self-portrait while spinning in your desk chair. Sure, it feels a little silly and you can't help but smile at what you are doing. I had to experiment with the shutter speed, and I figured out that it worked better with continuous shooting. Be careful though, you can get really dizzy and fall out of your chair!

January 15, 2009 - I spent the day playing with Wordle. This screenshot is what my chapbook of poems from Spain looks like as a wordle. My resume turned out pretty well too. www.wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/439584/My_Resume Thanks to www.wordle.net for an interesting day.

Breaking down the stage setup by one of the sound crew after a Grup Gündoğarken concert. I tried unsuccessfully to get good shots during the concert, but with the drifting 'smoke' and the odd colors, the photos were less than great. However, just as I was leaving they started to dismantle the stage set-up.... Ulus, Istanbul, Turkey

March 6, 2009 - Dear Rats, Please move out of this wall. You'll be much happier outside. Sunshine. Fresh air. Etc. So we have this problem in the apartment. Something comes and goes, squeaks and hollers, and thumps around inside this wall. We'll see what happens next. You New Englanders - do you have anything to say about this method?

February 26, 2009 - Biscochitos. This was my second go-around with these NM cookies. The first time they were tough as leather. This time they are better, but they just don't taste the same as they do in NM. They also aren't as flaky as NM cookies, but that's probably due to the lack of lard. Or lack of altitude. Or lack or aridity.

April 1, 2009 - It's National Poetry Month. I'm participating at readwritepoem.org by writing a poem a day. Some would say this is the edge of reason! The first attempt is here: haystravelogue.com/laughing-dove

September 11, 2009 - This fabulous machine is in the bathroom. It is both a washer and a dryer. One dial is for the washer and the other dial is for the dryer. So you can put the dirty clothes in the washer at night and in the morning take out the clean, dry clothes. How neat is that?

January 11, 2009 - Robert College is about 2/3 of the way up a steep hill. Usually we go down the hill to the village to shop and have to carry the groceries uphill. Today we climbed up, empty handed, in the rain and carried all the groceries downhill to the apartment.

September 10, 2009 - Our little house is on two levels. Downstairs are the kitchen and living room. The living room is also our dining room and our office. Upstairs are the bathroom and bedroom. There are lots of windows and pretty light and nice views everywhere.

February 7, 2009 - Mike and I are walking back to campus from a little nearby grocery store that avoids the hill and all of its steps but has only staples - eggs, onions, bread, cereal, beer. The two men in front of us walk in step, hands behind their backs.

February 27, 2009 - I just discovered a camera setting that lets me deliberately over-expose my photos. And then I can over-over-expose them in the photo processor! Does anyone else think that I'm in a photo slump? More over-exposures to follow.

September 2, 2009 - Most of our packing boxes held kitchen equipment. Now, it's all unpacked and stowed away. There is so much storage space here compared to last year's apartment! I just made a grocery order, so soon there will be food, too.

January 21, 2009 - I got a haircut today, but that doesn't disguise the flu residue - the cold sore and the dark circles under my eyes. The hair-cutter loves to sing, and he serenaded me all through the haircut, so that was pretty cheery.

January 5, 2009 - Now that most of the leaves have fallen, it is easier to see this little church on the campus. However, it is still hard to get a good angle on it. There are buildings immediately to the right and left.

January 1, 2009 - We walked to Bebek this morning. The weather has finally cleared up, and there were a lot of fishermen along the way. They were catching these little fish, sometimes 3, 4, or 5 fish on a single line.
