This is a Green Roof above the National Archives in Copenhagen. The green roof saves energy and CO2. The saving occurs because a green roof insulates the building better against cold and heat. This results in lower energy consumption for heating and cooling - and thus less CO2 emissions. The green roofs contribute effectively to urban climate adaptation. By using tiny plants the roofs act as absorbent sponges when it rains. This means that the green roof reduces and delays the precipitation runoff, and relieves the sewers and waste water systems for large quantities of water. Small plants like sedum and houseleek may for example absorb 60-80% of the rain that falls on the roof. That great...and yet so pretty...

Due to the changing weather conditions in Denmark, Copenhagen suffered from a crazy cloudburst this summer, leaving hundreds of basements full of water. So thumbs up for companys who have chosen green roofs! Green roofs serve several purposes for a building, such as absorbing rainwater, providing insulation, creating a habitat for wildlife, and helping to lower urban air temperatures and combat the heat island effect.
