Dad, Kevin and Steven at Border Crossing to Nuevo Laredo
Made by Kevin Borland
This photo was from our 1990 family summer road trip. At the time, I was between my Sophomore and Junior years in high school, and my brother Steven would begin fourth grade that coming September. My parents, my brother and I departed from our home in Hardyston, New Jersey, after my father came home from work on Friday, August 3rd, and we arrived in Laredo, Texas, in the late hours of the next evening. On the 5th, we walked across the Mexican border to the city of Nuevo Laredo, and my father hired a taxi to take us to several tourist locations including a large indoor flea market. We stayed in a hotel in Laredo with an outdoor pool. After the day-trip to Mexico, I remember swimming in the pool, and talking to some of the other kids my age. There were a number of teenagers in the pool area who said they were staying there on a month-to-month basis with their families. We then moved on to San Antonio, Texas, on the 6th, where we visited the Alamo. We celebrated my father's 40th birthday in Fort Worth, on August 7th. I remember swimming with with my family in the pool at a nice hotel there, when my mother got a call from her sister Barbara announcing the premature birth of my cousin Jill. My parents went out that night to see a country music performance while I watched my brother. While driving through Texas, we made a short trip across the Mexican Border to see the city of Juarez, probably around the 9th, where I bought a miniature guitar. We arrived at the Texas-New Mexico border August 10th, where we took pictures of the welcome sign on I-10, north of El Paso. We stayed in a hotel that night in Taos, New Mexico, and we visited Taos Pueblo on the 11th. From New Mexico, we headed north, and arrived in Kearney, Nebraska August 12th, having driven straight from Taos. I was still wearing my Boston T-shirt from the previous day when we stopped at Stagecoach Gifts in Kearney. We checked into the nearby Ramada in Kearney where we spent the night of the 12th. The next morning we swam in the pool before heading east. On the 13th, we stopped to eat at the Cove Restaurant in Moscow, Iowa. The 13th was a Monday, so my father would have had 6 more days to get home before he had to return to work from his two-week vacation. While I have not located any photographs to support my speculation, based on the route my father took to get us home, we probably stopped in Akron, Ohio for a few days, where we may have visited my then 84-year-old great-grandfather Weldon Borland.
