The Suica system, a contactless payment system that allows consumers to buy things using contactless smart cards for payment, is currently being used on the JR East network, Tokyo Monorail, and Rinkai Line of the Japanese railway system. It was deployed beginning in November 2001. Cards can be used for access to the train system as well as for purchases from some vending machines, as shown here. Not sure if this is graffiti or what, but it looked cool. This is in Asakusa on the second evening. Asakusa was an amazing area that I really fell in love with. It has lots of shops, a covered market area, a beautiful shrine, quaint neighborhood and almost any type of store you'd need.
