Figment, a small purple dragon, occasionally seen sporting a yellow sweater, is the mascot of the Imagination! pavilion at the Epcot theme park at Walt Disney World Resort. He is extensively seen in Epcot merchandise. The Journey Into Imagination pavilion opened with the rest of EPCOT Center on October 1, 1982, but the Journey Into Imagination dark ride did not open until March 5, 1983. In the original attraction, Dreamfinder, a jolly wizard-like scientist, teaches Figment how to use his imagination. Figment is meant to be the literal embodiment of the phrase figment of the imagination. He is composed of various elements Dreamfinder found in his travels including two tiny wings, large yellow eyes, the horns of a steer (or dilemma, according to a 1983 appearance on the Today Show), a crocodile's snout, and the childish delight found at a birthday party. Figment is described in detail in the Dreamfinder's song One Little Spark (by the Sherman Brothers). Dreamfinder introduces him: Two tiny wings, eyes big and yellow, horns of a steer (cow sound), but a lovable fellow. From head to tail, he's royal purple pigment, and there, voila, you've got a Figment. In 1999, Disney radically refurbished the attraction as part of its Millennium Celebration at Epcot, removing Dreamfinder and Figment except for fleeting glimpses of the dragon. That version, titled Journey Into Your Imagination, was a completely new experience in which Dr. Nigel Channing (Eric Idle of Monty Python fame) led a tour of the fictional Imagination Institute. The Channing character originated in the adjacent Honey, I Shrunk the Audience 3-D movie attraction. After numerous complaints about the revamped attraction, including a Disney stockholder who questioned CEO Michael Eisner about Figment's absence during the company's annual shareholders meeting, a modest 2002 refurbishment modified the 1999 version to add the dragon as a playful foil for Dr. Channing throughout the Imagination Institute tour. The new version pointedly was branded Journey Into Imagination with Figment. In the original attraction, Figment was voiced by Billy Barty; in the current version, Dave Goelz provides the voice, due to the fact that Barty had died before the second version had shut down. In the version where Dave Goelz provided Figment's voice,Figment's voice sounds the same as the My Little Pony character Spike the Dragon in the 1980s cartoon. A View Through The Leaves

A view of DIsney's Imagination! Pavilion in Epcot's Future World. While the pavilion itself has existed since 1982, it has gone through three significant phases. The original started out as an area in which the 3-D film Magic Journeys was played with a song by the same name by the Sherman Brothers. The Makin' Memories slide presentation, a history of photography was the pre-show presentation. When Journey Into Imagination opened a year later, the area was dubbed the Journey Into Imagination Pavilion. From 1983 to 1986 it held Journey Into Imagination, the (upstairs) ImageWorks, and Magic Journeys. In 1986, however, Magic Journeys was replaced by Captain EO, a more advanced 3-D film created by George Lucas and starring Michael Jackson as the title character. In 1994, Captain EO was replaced by Honey, I Shrunk the Audience, starring Rick Moranis as Professor Wayne Szalinski and Eric Idle as the Imagination Institute chairman, Dr. Nigel Channing. In 1998, the original Journey Into Imagination went down for a rehab. During this rehab, the upstairs ImageWorks was closed and the building's white and blue painting exterior was replaced with different colors, navy blue being primary. The original glass sign was replaced by one made of wood and metal. The leap frog fountains were reduced in size to accommodate the new gift shop at the exit of the new Journey Into Imagination. The glass pyramids remained intact, although the upstairs ImageWorks was closed, to be replaced by the downstairs ImageWorks. The pavilion was renamed Imagination! in 1999, when the new attraction opened. Fans were upset that Dreamfinder, a popular character from the previous ride, was gone. Furthermore, Figment, another popular character, only made cameo appearances until his short dialogue at the end of the ride. By the end of 2001, Disney closed the ride and modified the attraction, bringing Figment back into a more prominent role, although the Dreamfinder remained absent. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imagination!_%28Epcot_pavilion%29

Figment Flying

A whimsical look at how our senses play a part in our imagination with Dr. Nigel Channing and a cute purple dragon named Figment as our guides!! Wander through the queue and see part of the Imagination Institute. There is a portrait gallery of Inventor of the Year winners, which includes Dr. Channing, Dr. Wayne Szalinski (Honey I Shrunk the Audience) and Dr. Brainard from Flubber. The colors become much brighter as you enter the loading and unloading zone. Slow moving red vehicles (similar to tose on Spaceship Earth) crawl by as you move from the moving ramp into the vehicle. There are 2 rows and both can comfortably seat 2 adults or 2 adults and a child. A large adult may want to sit in their own row. The back row is slightly wider than the front row. Once inside the vehicle, Dr. Channing begins to provide an overview of your Open House experience and it's here you get your first glance at Figment! Travel through several labs that study our senses and how they are intertwined with our imagination --Sight, Sound and Smell. One never gets to Taste and Touch, as Figment - well - he has other plans for the Open House. There are special effects, we are dealing with our senses afterall, so be prepared especially for the sense of Sound and Smell (see Touring Tips below for details). I won't give away any of the surprises in the ride, but there are a couple of nods to the original ride. One is an office door marked Dean Finder and the old film of Figment somersaulting is shown on his TV in the upside down house. One Little Spark is prominent throughout the ride, albeit with new lyrics. Figment's new voice is different enough to be noticeable to longtime fans, and nowhere near as good as Billy Barty's Figment. Imagination Pavilion Walt Disney World EPCOT Orlando Fl.

Journey Into Imagination (the horror)

By far the worst ride we went on during our entire trip to DisneyWorld. Probably the worst ride Disney has attached it's name to ever since SuperStar Limo closed at California Adventure. Let's see: Eric Idle tries to take you on a tour of a sensory laboratory (?) but a psychotic purple dragon he created while playing God, Figment, begins fiending for imagination like some sort of junkie. This dragon decides to hijack each laboratory display to turn things to the topic of imagination, which usually has little bearing on anything other than to sing a song that rhymes. Things that constitute imagination according to this ride: • Hearing a train instead of beeps. • Not taking an eye-test. • Smelling a skunk instead of something pleasant. By the end of the ride Eric Idle essentially loses his mind and thinks Figment has somehow made a point by being an asshole, which you then celebrate by seeing Figment's house which is on the ceiling (which, per usual, isn't all that imaginative). As this ride closes you just want to punch Figment for being annoying and hang your head at Eric Idle for cashing that paycheck. If that's not enough, they hit you with that imagination song to get stuck in your head until the end of time, never letting you forget the horror.

The ImageWorks is an interactive exhibit area at Epcot's Imagination! pavilion, described in the closing spiel of the original Journey Into Imagination as the creative playground of the future. Originally, the attraction was in the upstairs area of the pavilion in the glass pyramids. After the 1999 refurbishment of the ride, a new ImageWorks was constructed downstairs by the unload for the new attraction, under the name The What-If? Labs, with a few new things to see and do. The original ImageWorks is in fact, mostly intact, though now used for special events and storage, though late in August, the area started being used for the finale of an interactive Kim Possible activity being tested around Epcot, primarily in World Showcase. The ImageWorks has also appeared at Tokyo Disneyland in the form of a gift shop for Honey, I Shrunk the Audience. All association with Kodak was removed when the company ended its sponsorship of the pavilion in 2010; the only noticable changes should be the disappearance of Kodak signs at the attraction. Tag along with your favorite feisty dragon in Journey Into Imagination With Figment, an attraction that's fun for little ones in the Imagination! Pavilion in the Future World area of Epcot theme park. Journey Into Imagination With Figment begins with an invitation by Chairman Dr. Nigel Channing to attend an open house event at his prestigious Imagination Institute. Inside his precious sensory labs, Dr. Channing sets out to prove how the 5 senses—sound, sight, smell, touch and taste—capture and control the imagination. But much to Dr. Channing's chagrin, the playful purple dragon Figment has joined the tour, too. Full of mischief and music, Figment derails Dr. Channing's sound experiment, screws around with the sight chart and causes quite a stink in the Smell Lab. Taking over the tour, Figment leads you to his whimsical upside-down house where, from this topsy-turvy perspective, he proves that imagination works best when set free. two tiny wings, eyes big and yellow, horns of a steer, but a lovable fellow. from head to tail, he's royal purple pigment, and there, voila, you've got a Figment! - Dreamfinder this is one of my favorite characters at disney, that's in the Journey into Imagination ride at Epcot. I don't like the new figment at all because of the newest version of the ride (which horribly SUCKS, and not to mention that figment is really annoying in it), but for the first version of it... sure, i've only ridden the original one probably around 5 times in my whole life before it closed in 98', but it was really an amazing dreamy ride that is still in my top 10 of disney rides. I even have a photo with dreamfinder when I was little kid (the character that was practicely thrown away when the first version closed), and a photo from inside the ride cars that I'll have to find and upload. I would pay money to ride this ride just one more time!

The Gift Shop immediately following the What If Labs has computer-generated photos taken with Disney Characters. There is plenty of Figment merchandise in the form of mugs, T-shirts, key chains etc as well as Imagination Institute merchandise. Occassionally you can find something with Dreamfinder on it as well. There are also some unusual etched Lucite gifts here -- the images they can etch into the material are really quite impressive! There are a number of Instant Photo booths by Kodak where, for a price, you can make your own Epcot Passport, Photo-ID Badge for the Imagination Institute, or picture postcards to send to friends and family! This Imageworks incarnation is located on the first floor of the pavilion, outside of the ride exit. The area is directly adjacent to the pavilion's gift shop. It was known as the Kodak What If Labs from 1999-2010 while Kodak was a sponsor for the exhibit. The Kodak name has since been dropped. Stepping Tones - much like the original, though now featuring picture panels making sounds Figment's Melody Maker - Added in the 2002 refurbishment, guests can cause Figment to play an instrument to the tune of One Little Spark, changing pitch by what height Figment is at on the screen Imagination Pavilion Walt Disney World EPCOT Orlando Fl.

Imagination! (formerly The Journey Into Imagination pavilion) is a pavilion on the western side of Future World, one of two themed areas of Epcot, a theme park at the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida USA. It holds various imagination-based attractions. It is commonly referred to as The Imagination Institute (a fictional institute that is featured in some of the attractions) or by the name of one of the attractions that it holds. The pavilion was sponsored by the Eastman Kodak company from when it opened with the park in 1982 until August 2010. Imagination Pavilion Walt Disney World EPCOT Orlando Fl.

Inventor of the Year award recipients: Dr. Nigel Channing (Eric Idle), Director of the Imagination Institute; Professor Ned Brainard (Robin Williams), inventor of Flubber; and Professor Wayne Szalinski (Rick Moranis), creator of the incredible Shrinking Gun. Aside from referencing the films, this detail also helps tie together the story of the individual attractions in the Imagination pavilion. In the Honey, I Shrunk the Audience attraction next door, we get to see Szalinski's Inventor of the Year award ceremony, hosted by Nigel Channing. a building that ages well over time....like a fine wine. how i managed the color structure.. first off the camera was set to manual and set at an ISO of 200. There were no ND filters used (hence the sign is blown out) after a little ACR fun with clarity and adjustment brushes i sent it to PS for some color correction. In PS I converted the image mode from RGB to Lab, and went into Apply Image and fiddled around with the blends on the 'a' channel. afterwards i adjusted the levels and curves while in Lab mode. afterwards i sent it back to RGB for jpeg conversion.

An instrumental version of the Imagnation tune that was sung on the ride was playing while the pictures on the floor and walls randomly lit up. All the kids were running around wildly, trying to catch the lights, so it took me a while to figure out how it was supposed to work: if you stood on a square while it was lit, the instrument pictured in the square would play along to the tune for as long as you stood there. But none of the kids cared to stay on a square long enough to discover that for themselves!

As happy as I am to have Figment back in Epcot, I am not too thrilled with the new Journey into Imagination attraction. This is one attraction that has not been improved with all the changes that have been done to it! Journey Into Imagination is worth seeing, but it just cannot compare to the original! Eric Idle is no Dreamfinder! This is a 3 shot HDR image, done with Photomatix and then run through Photoshop.

The horrendous Imagination Pavilion — Home to boarded-up interactive experiences. Once upon a time, the Imagination Pavilion had an inspiring amazing attraction and many fun, interactive things to do at the end of the ride. The ride used to be inspirational and uplifting, but now the whole thing is a questionable downer. It's bland, flat, and boring as hell. Why did Disney ever rip out the original?

I finally replaced the temporary pyramids with something a little bit more accurate. It was kind of necessary because of the lobby interior work. I also updated the exterior colors a bit. www.facebook.com/pages/Journey-Into-Imagination-Recreatio...
