"Danny de Munk" on Queen's day
Made by B℮n
Danny de Munk started acting at the age of 12 as the leading role in the film Ciske de Rat The title song of the film Ik voel me zo verdomd alleen was also sung by Danny de Munk and scored 1984 a number one hit in the Dutch Top 40 and stayed there for 14 weeks (3 weeks number one). Nowadays there is a musical of Ciske de Rat with many new Danny de Munk's. This boy dressed as Danny de Munk was singing Aan de voet van die mooie Wester on 30th of April - Queen's day (a song about the Wester church).

Home sweet home!

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. The name is a derivative from Amstel dam pointing to the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel. The city is known for its historic port, the Rijksmuseum, the red-light district (de Wallen), the liberal coffeeshops, and the canals which have led to Amsterdam being termed the Venice of the North. Finally back home after visiting Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Monaco, Italy and Luxembourg.

#2 Jaap

#2 of 100 Strangers, meet Jaap Volkers. I was walking around in Jordan looking for interesting strangers when I saw this gentlemen through a door working on a painting. After presenting myself I asked about who he was and what he was up to, which led to him inviting me in to his studio to have a look around. After that it was quiet obvious that I was dealing with an artist and painter as his studio was filled with mostly paintings but also other works of art. He also showed me into his gallery which was actually the shared hallway to the buildings tenants. Though this would definitely be an entrance I'd like to have to my house a lady passing though there pointed out that this 'could not continue'. This picture is #2 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.100Strangers.com

Westerkerk Amsterdam
Made by Joep R.
Westerkerk History The Westerkerk was officially opened on Whitsunday 1631. It is one of the oldest churches especially built for the Protestant services, and the largest as such church in the Netherlands. The tower, which occupies a unique place in the affections of the people of Amsterdam, bears the symbol of the imperial crown of Maximilian of Austria, which was his gift to the city in gratitude for support given to the Austro-Burgundian princes. It has inspired many songs and poems and remains a symbol of the city for Amsterdammers abroad. Rembrandt, one of the worldís most famous painters, was buried in the church. Near the church and in view of the tower, Anne Fank wrote her diary in the Annex, her hiding place from the Nazis. In 1966 Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus were married in the church. www.westerkerk.nl/

07/08/2010; Just my humble addition to the Gay Pride canal parade. Maybe I've become too much of a critic on my own work, but I just couldn't get into a groove. Mostly because of all of the rain yesterday, but also because my ordered 18-105mm turned out to not be there to be picked up in the store yet due to poor communication on their website. Anyway, I'm putting my money for an actual series of good shots on next year's edition. I definitely got that lens by then, so I can actually be in time to pick a good spot in front of all of the people. Then all that remains, is Mother Nature that's hopefully in a better mood than she was yesterday.

It is often said that nowadays The Netherlands contains more Citroën cars per square kilometer than can be found in the country of origin: France. A Citroën DS in the Jordaan area of Amsterdam. The Dutch are fond of Citroëns. Er wordt nog wel eens gezegd dat er inmiddels meer Citroëns zijn per vierkante kilometer in Nederland dan het land van origine: Frankrijk. Nederlanders zijn gek op dit merk. Amsterdam, Elandsgracht - May 29, 2010

Tram Snow
Made by canti1982
Winter has properly arrived here in Amsterdam. I thought I should try and take a few shots to capture the moment. Its dark when I leave work so the street lights were illuminating the snow on the ground. My next purchase is going to have to be a tripod as this shot was taken handheld with a very high iso. I do like the film noir effect it achieved though.

Pink Bubbly
Made by Pete foley
Taken during the huge Gay Pride parade in Amsterdam, when 350,000 people line the Prinzengracht canal. Somehow I ended up sitting on a boat wearing a pink fedora and a pink boa (I was wearing the hat, not the boat). I await seeing myself photographed at these celebrations with some trepidation - pink is not a great color on me :-)

Rabbit crosses Prinsengracht - look out for bicycles!
Made by Rabbitroundtheworld
I've escaped from the winter weather in Scotland - to the winter weather in Amsterdam! It's lovely to explore the little narrow streets and the canals, but I do have to be careful not to get knocked down by a bicycle. (It's estimated that there are between 600,000 and a million bicycles in the city - more bicycles than people?).

Water tricks
Made by kevin dooley
A hotel fountain in Amsterdam. (Explore) When you think of how many parts of the world are dying for water, it is kind of cocky for us to show how we can throw it up in the air so it looks cool. Here in Phoenix, there's a fountain or fake waterfall everywhere you look. For cryin' out loud, we're in a desert!

Enjoying a lovely day
Made by kees straver
I´ve just finished a 9 day work week at the hospital and today was my first day off, so what better way to celebrate freedom than to grab my bike and spend a whole day shooting photos of everything I came across. This shot was from a couple of months ago because I really just got back from hunting in Amsterdam.

Christmas Canal Parade (2 more inside)
Made by Aardewerk
23/12/2010; I had a few other locations in mind as well to go and shoot, but there was a brutal wind coming out of the northeast that was freezing up more than what's good for a human being. So after a while, and I decided to see some more Christmas lights, but then at a bar.

Broken Dreams
Made by digi / Jeroen
Dreaming is something universal so it’s only normal that so many songs and poems are about dreaming. Do you have any good examples? I’ll kick off with the Eurithmics (sorry, can’t do any better! ;-)) Sweet dreams are made of this Who am I to disagree?

Amsterdam lijn 16 op de Westermarkt
Made by railfan3
Koninginnedag en rellen omleidingen zag lijn 16 via de Raadhuisstraat richting Westermarkt. Een tram van lijn 13 richting stad had zojuist een zware noodstop uitgevoerd, vandaar al het zand op de sporen. Tram on route 16 was diverted way of the normal route.
