Dillinger Drank Here
Made by rjseg1
I've been to the John Barleycorn Tavern many times, so when our little historical tour stopped here I thought I'd hear the same, old things. Yes, I knew during Prohibition that it was a Chinese laundry fronting as a speakeasy -- they smuggled the booze in literally under the sheets. However, I didn't know that John Dillinger often drank here. Apparently, he came to Chicago for R&R because he wasn't wanted by the Chicago police, as his bank robberies occurred in other jurisdictions. Not only did they cut him some slack, but half of the speakeasy customers were cops. Who knew? Also, during the recent filming of the upcoming movie Public Enemies, Johnnie Depp, who plays Dillinger, shot some scenes here.

My Photo's at Mid-North Event
Made by rjseg1
Last night at the John Barleycorn Tavern the Mid-North Community Association awarded grants to several local Chicago non-profit groups. In addition they honored Jack Kearney, an 83 year-old Chicago sculptor (see photo above this one). Previously, I took about 50 photos of his studio and of his sculptures in and around Oz Park. During the event these photographs were displayed in a screen show projected onto one of the walls (patting myself on the back) as shown here. A tavern has been in existence at this location since 1891 (although it was a Chinese laundry cum speakeasy during prohibition). That's my wife Joan facing the camera.
