Concourse B&W

Concourse B&W
Made by mrbaggins1
These are a couple of photo's I snapped inside the Park Station Concourse yesterday. I do apologize for the quality. I went unprepared without adequate lighting or a tripod so there's a lot of noise and blur but I thought I'll upload it for those interested in Urbex . This borders on an Urbex site so I'm going to mark it as such. Malix, if you want me to delete the set, let me know. It is largely abandoned and is only used occasionally - I got to know about it because heart-girls daughter-in-law is the events planner for a wedding that will be held here later in the year. Jozi's Night of a 1000 Drawings also takes place here. It's in a sad state of neglect. Large portions of parquet flooring are missing, pealing paint, broken windows and fittings. I cannot imagine how such neglect is allowed to happen. The article below shed some light on the history of this amazing space.. www.mg.co.za/article/2010-07-16-going-deeper-underground

Ellis Park and Johannesburg from Langerman's Kop

Ellis Park and Johannesburg from Langerman's Kop
Made by finepixtrix
Was supposed to join the Joburg Photowalkers for a sunrise shoot on Langerman's Kop on Sunday morning, but took a wrong turn somewhere and ended up searching for the place for almost two hours! Finally got there, but think everyone else had left already. Anyway, seeing as I was there I decided to look around and was rewarded with some stunning views of the City of Gold (as Johannesburg is sometimes called). I will definitely go back for more. The structure topped with the red band is the famous Ellis Park rugby stadium. It was also the venue for the Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge concert in South Africa in 1995, and several World Cup games in 2010.

The Financial district with the diamondshaped building of the diamond company De Beers. A striking building in Diagonal Street, the Diamond Building, with a façade reminiscent of the facets of a diamond. It was designed by the well-known architect Helmut Jahn (b. 1940), who now lives in Chicago. Finanzdistrict mit dem wie ein Diamant geformten Gebäuder der Diamantengesellschaft De Beers. Painted window

A deliberately out-of-focus image of the very colourful painted window panes at Revolution House in the Arts on Main precinct. I thought it came out quite nicely and so it was worth putting on display. Best seen with the black background. Later....I went back to Revolution House yesterday (10/04/11) and this window has now been taken out in its entirety as the building is being renovated so I suppose that this photo may be the last record of a very interesting feature. RIP window :-(

Sangre, Sudor y Lagrimas (Blood, Sweat, and Tears)

Sangre, Sudor y Lagrimas (Blood, Sweat, and Tears)
Made by Yermass

Christiano Ronaldo's image on the Life Center is refected on the side of 11 Diagonal Street. 11 Diagonal Street is a skyscraper in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was built in 1984 to a height of 80 metres. It is designed to look like a diamond as it reflects different views of the Central Business District from each angle of the building. The architect was the world famous and renowned Helmut Jahn. Johannesburg June 2010

This huge piece appears in Market Street Johannesburg and forms part of a body of work depicting the South African Freedom Charter of 1955 as Street Art by the talented Faith47 - The remainder of the pieces are in Cape Town. Carlton Centre

Between the N2 freeway and the lake are earth dumps barely visible under the green. These are the product of gold mining in area on which the city was founded just over 120 years ago. lol, there was another group of ppl that made a joke about that lake/body of water -- the Johannesburg Ocean. Johannesburg is one of two major cities in the world not built near a major body of water.

In the lower left is the Carlton Hotel, and some nice plaza in the streets. The blue perspex & steel roof in below creates a pretty neat atmosphere in the shopping centre. The hotel, this tower, and the shopping centre all share the same basement. In all, the complex has around 3.5 million sq metres of floor space, of which 1.9 million sq metres is below street level.

This is the second time I visited this amazing, largely abandoned space in the centre of Jozi. I took a tripod and a Canon speedlite and a flashlight to explore some areas that are pitch dark in broad daylight. The main concourse is HUGE and I could not fit it in top to bottom in a single frame - main staircase on the southern side.

The building with the green dome is the old City Hall, which now houses the Gauteng Legislature. Also known here is the Momentum building (FNB), and the old JSE (blue diamond) on 11 Diagonal St. Behind the three high-rise buildings in the right of this photograph are four identical low-rise 'squares' belonging to Westbank (FNB/RMB)

Pieces by DeKoR oNe in the Park Station Concourse - There's lots more of this project on his photostream. Created for the Standard Bank Big Bash in late 2009. According to his stream these works, all in B&W, took more than a month and a half to create, Now mouldering away & forgotten in this huge empty space.

Rapture

This building is also in the central district of Johannesburg, South Africa. The architect that did the design was fascinated with the Art Deco style of Chicago at the time and it also reminded me of the design of a game called Bioshock thus the name of Rapture ND110 Filter used to get some movement in the clouds.

The blue buildings are the KwaDukuza Egoli Hotel - meaning Gathering Place in the City of Gold. It was formerly the Johannesburg Sun. Not sure what the name of the zebra building is - but I'm sure it knows what it is (lol, walked right past it.) Joubert Park with the Johannesburg Art Gallery in the background
