UK - London - Westminster: Jewel Tower
Made by wallyg
The Jewel Tower is one of only two surviving sections of the medieval royal Palace of Westminster, the other being Westminster Hall. It was built in approximately 1365 to house the treasures of Edward III and its alternative name was the King's Privy Wardrobe. It is a small three storey building constructed of stone, which stands across the road from the current , home of the British Parliament. It was located at the far southern end of the palace complex, and was built into the palace's defensive walls but was detached from the main buildings, which explains its survival of the great fire of 1834 which destroyed most of the palace. It is managed by English Heritage and contains an exhibition called Parliament Past and Present. The remains of a moat can be seen adjacent to the tower. Until 1834 the historic records of the House of Lords were stored here; they are now in the Victoria Tower and managed by the Parliamentary Archives. The Tower served as the weights and measures office from 1869 until 1938 and another.

Victoria Tower(Left) The Victoria Tower was purpose-built as a fireproof repository for books and documents, as required by the competition to rebuild the Palace of Westminster after the fire of 16 October 1834, which had destroyed the building and almost all of the records of the House of Commons.

The wooden plank and posts to the right of the window were part of the old wooden (oak if I remember correctly) foundation of the building. They were discovered and recovered during some restoration work performed on the building. Read more about the Jewel Tower here: www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/jewel-tower/

The Jewel Tower, or 'King's Privy Wardrobe', was built c.1365 to house Edward III's treasures. One of only two buildings of the original Palace of Westminster to survive the fire of 1834, the tower features a 14th-century ribbed vault. The remains of a moat and medieval quay are still visible outside. (source: www.english-heritage.org.uk, 2008)

Palace of Westminster visible beyond Abingdon Street. This is the only useful pic I have from inside the Jewel Tower. I was still somewhat wiped out by all the detail in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Of course, one can visit the Jewel Tower anytime. But it was free today.
