The el was jampacked today, even before 5. Maybe everybody had a Monday that seemed as long as mine did. Even though I waited until 2 to eat lunch, the afternoon dragged. They've turned on the heat for the little enclosures, even though the signs clearly state that heat will not be provided until November 1st of each year. Maybe there is an alternate basis for turning on the heat - the first snow of the year, which was several days ago now. At least the platform seemed cozy and warm today, even on a cold rainy day. Some days I get on the train and I look around at everyone and wonder about their stories, their days, their histories, their families. Other days, like today, I just crowd on into whatever space I can fit my body, and I read my book.

Nah, its Helmut Jahn's 1985 James R. Thompson, State of Illinois Building with the Jean Dubuffet sculpture, Monument with Standing Beast. I think the beast refers to the building. Its definitely an acquired taste. But, the 17 story glass-topped atrium building is definitely different. Worth a trip, even if you hate it. As many of the state employees do -- for its heating and cooling problems

A corner view of Helmut Jahn's much maligned State of Illinois building. I still hate the salmon and robin's egg blue colored tiles, but the spaceship design is beginning to grow on me after all these years.
