I took this picture just before day break, at around 5.45 a.m. on December morning in Puri, India. I saw the girl coming from the horizon, she was way to small for the bicycle that she was riding, and I knew I had to take the picture. I stopped down, pointed by wide angle, and cropped to fit. Unfortunately, I wanted to keep the old men in the back ground, to provide some contrast with the young girl. In hindsight, I should have given the girl somewhere to go. That being said, I think it's still a pretty picture. The pink hue is really a reflection of the light propagating from rising sun.

Singhadwara

Singhadwara (Lion's Gate) — the eastern (main) entrance to the Jagannath temple in Puri, Orissa. The sign above is controversial because technically only Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs of Indian origin are permitted inside. Even Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister of India, was denied entry since she was married to a Parsi. There was also a case of Hindus from Bali who were questioned. The proceedings of the temple may be viewed from the nearby Raghunandan Library.

Wheels of the Juggernaut

Wheels of the Juggernaut

Shot outside the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Orissa, a month after the Rath Yatra (Car Festival). The pillar at the back, the Aruna Stambha, was originally in the Konark Temple and was installed here in the 18th century. In the past, the multi-ton rath's (chariots) sometimes went out of control and would crush people in their way, which led the British to coin the word Juggernaut. This shot was selected as the admin's favorite in .

Gold Digger - Puri, India Aaah! those damn dust bunnies - they kill me. I was trying to get a deep depth of field, so I increased my F-stop on this one... only to realize that I had dust on my sensor !!!! Pffff. This is what happens when you switch lenses at the beach (not recommended.... :( ). Still, the moment captured was a beautiful one. A fisherman's son, bored out of his mind, contemplating on his next move...

Handsome man pulling children

Handsome man pulling children

Hairy chest! Mustache! Thick eyebrows. Beauty mark! Lungi.... shawl wrapped around shoulders. I just love this man. We were passing him in a village and it was just great luck that I got this capture. Also of note: one of the children has a big smudge on his forehead. That is to ward off the evil eye, I think. Smudges make children look less adorable so that evil spirits will ignore.

Taken outside the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Orissa, a month after the Rath Yatra (Car Festival). These multi-ton chariots sometimes go out of control and crush people in their way, which led the British to coin the word Juggernaut. New rath's are made every year for the Rath Yatra. What is amazing about these is that all the pieces fit together as well as dissemble like Lego blocks.

Among the geranium, a rash of purple campanula begins, scattering like Chinese fireworks through the delicate tan and yellow tips of saxifrage, encircling a group of bloody cranes' bills perched on rock. I want to name these flowers for you, poem source

Three Chariots on the Grand Road

The three chariots that will carry the trinity of Lord Jagannath, Subhadra and Balabhadra the next day wait on the Badadanda or the grand road. Shot from the Raghunandan Library in Puri. In the background is the temple of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. This is how it looks on most days.

That's a rope ; yes she is holding a rope on both end of which number of ropes are attached which are burning ; she is moving it so fast that the rope is acting like an iron rod. This is the way they perform Aarti in front of Lord Jagannath's Chariot at Puri.
