Itsukushima Shrine (厳島神社), Miyajima

HDR of the torii infront of Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima. The shots were at 1/30, 1/125, 1/500 (rest of the details are in the exif). This shot is pretty standard of how I'm doing HDR these days. I really don't like the super saturated, low contrast shots which seem to be the norm. For me HDR is about capturing a tonal range that you wouldn't be able to with a single shot. This doesn't mean that you have to expose every part of the shot to the middle of the histogram. In this shot for example, I want to portray a sense of twilight. I'm not trying to make it look like noon. I want the hills to be losing their detail, but I still want them to be hills and not a big black smudge. Nor am I trying to show every detail of the Torii. Infact all I wanted from the Torii was that it was red and not black. If I tried to take this with a single exposure, then I would either have blown out the sky, or clipped the shadows. You can see that this is the case by looking at the three component images I've put in a comment further down. The dark one is lucky to have any definition in anything except the sky. The light one doesn't show the sky texture at all, and the middle one doesn't do either of those parts justice. The only way to go is to take portions of each and place them where I want on the histogram. In this case I've been able to place the sky at the top of the histogram where I wanted it and I've been able to place the hills near the bottom while still letting them have definition and some detail. I've also managed to bring the Torii out of the blacks and show that it's in fact red and has some structure. I'm tempted to do a super-saturated, flat contrast image just to see, but I just wouldn't be happy with it.

Morning Torii
Made by jauderho
The next morning, I got up at 5am to drag myself down to the torii for sunrise. Despite it being ridiculously early, tourists started showing up soon after. As you can see here, you can walk right up to the torii at low tide. During our visit to Miyajima, it was somewhat curious that it was low tide at both sunset the day before and at sunrise. Known as one of the 3 Great Views of Japan, this 50 foot torii has been rebuilt 17 times, last in 1875. View on black. Filed as: 20070917_135729_4375
