Iroquois Park
Made by Daniel Light
Project 365 #218 08-06-2007 Twenty years I've lived in Louisville, but never--before tonight--had I set foot in Iroquois Park. Since I'm playing tourist this week, I ditched Cherokee Park (just blocks from my house) and drove to Iroquois Park. One of the highest elevations in Louisville, Iroquois Park potentially offers some fantastic views. Unfortunately, the smog level was so high today, I couldn't see much of anything. Furthermore, the four overlook areas I walked past were so overgrown with brush and trees that I had to climb up on the rock walls to see anything at all. I was disappointed that the park is looking really run-down. Although it's a huge, beautiful Olmsted park, the place was almost deserted. (Maybe that's just because of the heat.) The best part of the park--the top of the hill--was completely blocked off to traffic. A big chunk of the road leading to the top is washed out. The tennis courts are overgrown with weeds, obviously long unused. It's really sad. Is there no money in this city to take care of one of its greatest assets? Edit: Reading the city's parks website, it sounds like significant park improvements are in the works. I hope so.
