Ioannina (Greek: Iwa'nnina /io'anina/, often Gia'nnena /'janena/ or Gia'nnina /'janina/; anglicized to Yanina or Janina, Aromanian: Ianina, Albanian: Janin�, Turkish: Yanya) is a city of Epirus, north-western Greece, with a metropolitan population of approximately 100,000. It lies at an elevation of 600 metres above sea level. It is the capital of Ioannina Prefecture and of Epirus. The city lies on the western side of lake Pamvotis (Greek: Pa�bw%tida). It is located 450 km northwest of Athens, 350 km southwest of Thessaloniki and 100 km east of the port of Igoumenitsa in the Ionian Sea.

The poetics of collectedness Since the beginning the duties of the architect inevitably included the responsibility of the creation and the rejuvenation of that salutary connection between his environment and the accomplishments of technique. However the contemporary architect is forced to realize that the circumstance under which this fruitful connection takes place has profoundly changed. This project attempts to create an architectural composition taking into consideration the new responsibilities of the architect facing an environment that has radically suffered social and physical changes. The physical changes need not to be proven. The measures that are already being taken by authorities as well as citizens demonstrate their size and impact. It was that awakening that resulted to a whole ‘’new’’ style of architecture. We might not think about it that much, we might even try to avoid perceiving it this way, but ‘’green architecture’’ is here answering sufficiently the description of a proper architectural style. Impressive as it may be this independence doesn’t owe its existence solely to the problem that has initiated this architectural perception. Basically, it seems fair to assume that the reason for the emergence of ‘’green architecture’’ were, in fact, the changes of the physical environment, but the same time, the reason for its adaptation in the architectural scene had more to do with the changes of the social and economical environment. The contemporary architect needs to accept a rather uncomfortable, yet common truth: that the economic settlements no longer comply with the social relations. It is the social relations that are now defined based on the rules of the market. Based on that realization one is not surprised by the emerging sensitivity and the continuous declarations and manifestos for they can be interpreted as the ultimate result of economic choices made with exceptional clarity and coherence. None than less the fact that profit is the source of this growing sensitiveness doesn’t allow the architects to ignore the opportunity that is given. It imposes however a new responsibility. The contemporary architect needs to remember that architecture does not need to be defined by an adjective in order to have a justified purpose and vision. While he is free to create new perceptions that will allow him to approach the problem from different aspects, he also needs to remind himself to avoid enthusiasm from the wide acceptance which one of those might have. Facing this danger the architect needs to create synergies of different approaches. Synergies that will constantly improve the architectural question, keeping his concerns around the problem of architecture as a whole. Only when he learns how to control his enthusiasm should the architect gain his independence from the problems that the circumstance favors and nominates as important. energy Winter Along the southern façade of the building lie a glass surfaces which are able to retain large amounts of solar radiation. The glass surfaces encase behind them an old stone wall of particularly high thermal mass. As soon as it assembles enough thermal mass the stone wall begins to release heat inside the space, which provides the building with the necessary access and source of light. This space eventually becomes a glass case of the old stone wall. The warmth that has been created diffuses inside the rest of the composition, creating two parts. The space of the entrance, which is directly affected by the external environment, forming a device. A device that regulates the main space of the library in terms of temperature. The main space of the library, through the glass case, is indirectly affected by the change of seasons. The diffusion of the heated air is aided by a circumferential corridor that allows the air to flow, keeping a temperature of 13-15 degrees Celsius. Summer The sun protection of the glass cases is ensured by light shades, aided by the internal ramps and the plantation of high trees alongside. Inside the glass case of the entrance a water fall is formed on the stone wall. The water fall creates a cool stream of air which diffuses in the space of the library affecting the internal microclimate. The circumferential corridor continuous to funnel air of stable temperature.

This area is considered (The citadel - Its Kale-of the castle of Ioannina),the Byzantine church of Archangel Michael built between 1205 and 1215. After it was built in 1430 next to the ruined church a wooden mosque was originally called Fethiye Mosque (Mosque of the conquest). The stone is 1611 and 1795, Ali Pasha gives its current form. From the early days of its sovereignty, Ali Pasha made real obvious trends for autonomy. This was the cause in March 1820, the Sublime Porte in Istanbul put a price on a rebel and traitor and sent an army against him. The end came two years later, in January 1822. The head of Ali Pasha, having been exposed for three days on the ramparts of the fort this Jannina, came to Istanbul, legs of the sultan. The headless body of Ali was buried in the family tomb seraglios in Its Kale, near Fethiye Mosque. This tomb was surrounded as in 1944 with a nice tall balustrade which was removed during the German occupation to be replaced in recent years from new.

The Fetixe mosque. In this space it is considered that was found the place of Byzantine metropolitan temple of Archangel Micheal, protector of city, built from Micheal A' (1205-1215). Afterwards 1430 was built next to the devastated Metropolis the first megiti (wooden mosque), with the namw Fetixe mosque, that is to say mosque of conquest. In 1611, afterwards the failed revolutionary movement of Dionisiou of Philosopher and the dispossess Christian from the Castle, is erected stone, leadroof mosque with highthin minaret. In the 1795 Ali Pasas builded again giving his current form: square base, octagonal builting, vaulted roof. The facade and the Eastern aspect bring interventions from the Greek army. Externally in the northern and Eastern side is saved the flooring hagiatiou. Internally, are saved wall box in left parastada of Mixrapt, departments marble Byzantine temple, as well as the abstract paint decor of dome.

building The building is located subterranean, with an orientation to the south. It attempts to be adapted to the natural landscape, defining however as well, the cluster of the buildings, which consists of new and old ones. With its arrangement, it tries to communicate with its surroundings, which refer not only to the natural landscape but also to memory. It concerns a subterranean building with two wings. The southern wing looks like a fissure of the ground, forming the entrance. The northern wing consists of a ramp, which can take down the stroller smoothly, from the upper to the lower region, thus contributing to their unification. www.oiio.gr

Two kids balance across the remnants of Bohemond's wall, dating 1082, in the inner citadel of Ioannina. The minaret (minare) of the Fethiye Mosque is seen in the background. It was built around 1795 as Ali Pasas palace's mosque, at the position of a previous mosque. The latter was built over a Christian temple around 1618, after a failed revolution of farmers, led by Dionysios Filosofos, against the establishment of Turks within the citadel. Hence the name Fethiye, which in Turkish means Victory. Dionysios Filosofos (=philosopher) who was dubbed Skilosofos (skilos=dog) by the Turks, was eventually captured and skinned alive...

The building follows the changes of the seasons using glass surfaces along the south façade which encase the stone wall of the fortification. During the winter this system becomes the main heating source of the building. in Ioanina, Greece This shot is somewhat special to me - I was looking at a restaurant on the right of this door which had an interesting green lighting for its exterior walls when we moved on. My girlfriend then said oh, you have to make one of this door, I love it!. Without realising what the green light would do, I made a few shots with and without flash. Only when I reviewed the photo days later on the PC, I realised the special effect that was added to the picture.

Students all around Greece decided today to protest instead of going to school. On Saturday night a policeman in Athens shot a 15 year old boy in cold blood after a verbal fight. An hour later, after his death, people crowded the streets of more than 20 cities and towns in Greece and riots erupted. The main targets were the police, banks and major commercial stores. The protests and riots continue for a third day without stop with the country in turmoil.

The development of the building aims to complete the existing scattered cluster of public buildings which was settled at the old fortification area. Its function as a municipal library is able to attract a variety of social groups to an area whose former state used to separate the city. The building is a socket in the ground. It is surrounded by solid earth. Therefore the library constitutes a high mass building, presenting all the benefits that derive from this quality.The element of water is integrated to the compositional context bringing its own qualities of microclimate and visual atmosphere. This minaret belongs to the Καλού Τσεσμέ mosque (originally Κανλή Τσεσμέ = blood fountain, referring to the violent suppression of the uprising against the Turks led by Dionisios Skilosofos), one of the 3 preserved mosques in Ioannina. It is here seen next to a sheet iron chimney from a slow-combustion stove, the typical heating element of the old houses in the region.
