We got a call that a possum had run into someone's bodega on Dyckman Street. When we arrived, it was trapped between two milk crates, and I first thought that it might be a baby porcupine, with its coarse, tipped hair. We nearly set it free in the forest, then thought better of it (maybe it was an exotic?) and brought it back to the nature center, where most of us agreed that it looked most like a groundhog (aka woodchuck). Our boss, director of the rangers program, vehemently denied our taxonomy, though. She swore up and down that growing up in Vermont, she'd seen dozens of woodchucks, and this was definitely not one. Her theory was that it was some strange South American marmot or maybe a ground squirrel. She brought it back to Parks headquarters to find a biologist who might be able to positively identify it. A few days later, the verdict was in: a baby woodchuck. So much for being from Vermont, but ain't it cute?
