The Cathedral of Seville & The Giralda
Made by Emm Ess
View Large On Black The Cathedral of Seville, also known as Catedral de Santa María de la Sede (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See) is the Cathedral of the city of Seville in Andalusia. It is the largest Gothic cathedral and the fourth largest Christian church in the world. It is the largest of all Roman Catholic cathedrals (Saint Peter's Basilica not being a cathedral) and also the largest Medieval Gothic religious building, in terms of both area and volume. It is 76 by 115 meters, and was built to cover the land previously occupied by the Almohad Mosque. This cathedral was built to demonstrate Seville's wealth, as it had become a major trading center in the years after the Reconquista. During the planning of the cathedral's construction, a member of the chapter was recorded to have commented we shall have a church [so great and] of such a kind that those who see it built will think we were mad.

Cathedral of Seville
Made by Alan Cordova
Cordova in its easy-going way has been content with the Mosque built by its predecessors, with the slight addition of the new cathedral swallowed up in the midst of it. Seville on the contrary, and at a much earlier date, determined to destroy its mosque and to build in its place a church, in the words of one of the Chapter 'so great and of such a kind that those who see it finished shall think we were mad.' This typically Andalusian sally was spoken at a meeting on 8 July 1401, when various designs had already been under consideration for some years. The official minute of the decision taken was that 'a new church shall be made so good that there shall be none its equal.' - John Harvey Cathedrals of Spain. London: B.T. Batsford Ltd, 1957. Pages 230-233.

Spain - Seville - Cathedral Interior
Made by Darrell Godliman
From Wikipedia : 'The city's cathedral was built from 1401–1519 after the Reconquista on the former site of the city's mosque. It is amongst the largest of all medieval and Gothic cathedrals, in terms of both area and volume. The interior is the longest nave in Spain, and is lavishly decorated, with a large quantity of gold evident. The Cathedral reused some columns and elements from the mosque, and, most famously, the Giralda, originally a minaret, was converted into a bell tower. It is topped with a statue, known locally as El Giraldillo, representing Faith. The tower's interior was built with ramps rather than stairs, to allow the Muezzin and others to ride on horseback to the top.'

Seville, Andalucia, Spain, The Apse of the Cathedral by night built on the 12th Century.
Made by sanguedolces
This is a night shot of the Apse of the Cathedral of Seville, Spain. This is the second greatest Catholic Church in all over the world. At the beginning it had been the great Muslim Mosque of Seville then was changed in this Church. It was built in the 12th Century. The tower in the right upper third had been the Minaret of the Mosque to day named The Giralda and it is as the Bell Tower of the Church. Only fantastic.

Cocodrilo de la Catedral de Sevilla
Made by tetegil

Catedral y Giralda Sevilla
Made by tetegil

Lights in Seville Cathedral

What a feeling in this huge Cathedral of Seville. The only largest building I visited is the Hassan II Mosque of Casablanca. Seville Cathdreal was built on the site of a mosque. It is the third largest church in Europe and the largest Gothic building in Europe.
