The InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam Hotel or Amstel Hotel is a five-star hotel in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on the east bank of the river Amstel. It was the country's first Grand Hotel. Samuel Sarphati, a physician and city planner, took the initiative to build the hotel, although he died in June 1866 before the hotel opened. The first years after the opening in 1867 were not successful and hotel almost closed. Although the French-Prussian War started in 1870 and its subsequent financial consequences, business improved that year. A young doctor by the name of Mezger began his practice in the hotel and attracted a special clientele. Although Mezger treated all kinds of people, the Amstel Hotel became famous for the many members of royalty and the nobility who stayed there for treatment. For eighteen years he saw his patients in the Amstel Hotel, until 1888, when Mezger left the Amstel Hotel and moved to Wiesbaden. The royal and noble guests kept coming to the hotel. Ever since, the Amstel Hotel has had a reputation for hosting numerous celebrities and other luminaries. In late September 1992, the Amstel Hotel was reopened after a two-year renovation. During the two year closure, craftsmen, artisans and engineers restored the entire hotel, at a cost of over NLG 70 million.

As always, no editing, no magic tricks, no Photoshop :) It seems that I am slowly overcoming my Killer-Cold and most annoying Ear-infection, I can partially hear again today and I'm only coughing every time I take a breath, a major improvement to yesterday where even the thought of breathing would bring on a coughing-fit that scared the birds off the roofs in my Hood... I'm sure my neighbors are strolling through the dark streets every night with torches and long sticks, trying to find that punk that is costing everybody in the area his/her well deserved night rest with his booming barking...it's my luck that the typical backyard acoustics in good old Amsterdam make it near impossible to identify the source of sounds but I better stay inside for another day or two and keep a low profile ;-P www.amstersam.com

Yesterday morning Amsterdam was completely white again, covered in the lovely snow we've come to love so much in the last 2 1/2 months...when will this end?! I'm really tired of risking my life every time I leave the house, I'm tired of wearing all the clothes I have at the same time and still being cold, I'm tired of people telling me to enjoy it instead of complaining about it (although there are less and less of those lately, haha ;) and I'm really tired of having to smoke ciggies outside in the icy wind, you can't even tell if the burn in your lungs is caused by the smoking or the harsh storm entering your body through every uncovered orifice :)) www.amstersam.com
