Roxy Exterior

Built in 1930, and designed by F.F. LeMaistre of Winnipeg, the Roxy Theatre was Saskatoon's second atmospheric cinema (after the Capitol) to usher in sound cinema. It has seen only minor structural changes since then. The interior was decorated in a Spanish Villa style with the walls covered with small balconies, windows and towers that gave the impression of quaint Spanish village. The ceiling was painted dark blue and had twinkling lights set in the plaster to give the impression of the night sky. Two cloud machines also added to the impression of sitting under the heavens. The theatre has only a small stage as the Roxy was built after the time when theatres had live performances. Cineplex Odeon acquired the theatre and operated it under the Towne Cinema name. After closing on July 21, 1995, it sat empty for a decade until purchased by Magic Lantern Theatres. In 2005 it was reopened with its interior and original name restored. It is a major landmark on 20th Street.

St. George's Ukrainian Cathedral

In 1910, the first Ukrainian settlers began arriving in Saskatoon and its outlying areas. An organizational meeting of the Ukrainian Catholic Parish of St. George was held on September 29, 1912 at which time its first Executive was elected. Construction of the second, current church of the parish, was begun in 1939 and completed in 1943. The church is a massive masonry structure that stands on a high concrete basement measuring 104 x 90 feet with intersecting wings that are 30 feet wide.

St. George's Dome

St. George's architectural plan is a four-column, seven-domed, cruciform-shaped, Byzantine-style basilica with north, south and east apses.. The central area of the church is dominated by a large octagonal dome, which is reinforced by the arcades of the vaulted ceilings and is supported by four massive octagonal columns. Each side of the octagonal drums supporting the dome has two arched windows that collectively illuminate the dome.

This low-light photo of the Roxy's main theatre shows the details of the walls and ceiling. In addition to the villa-style building details on the walls, the ceiling has small lights embedded in it to simulate twinkling stars in the night sky.

Roxy Wall

I'd never been in the Roxy Theatre before. Other people had described its interior to me, but I wasn't prepared for how astonishing it really looks. It is Saskatoon's last remaining atmospheric theatre and one of a few left in all of Canada.
