Now that I got it clean enough to run, I can take it to a shop for a thorough cleaning and tune up. I used an old hot rod trick. Soak then clean the parts in camping fuel. Then run the engine using clean camping fuel. It then cleans out the cylinder. BUT you have to make sure to put in clean oil and turn it by hand a few times to oil the cylinder. I'm glad I grew up around gear heads.

The body cavity is about an inch and a half of nothing. I filled it with 1 inch sheet foam. the other VW nuts tell me this will: 1: keep it warmer in the winter, and cooler in the summer. 2: The van will sound less like a dumpster when I slam the doors shut.

I couldn't believe what the seller had. When I saw the ad for this at $50, I thought it had to be a crappy box of parts. This is in excellent condition and sounds great.

I pulled all the cabinets, then the carpet, then the wood base. Surprise, 30 years of rust.
