La Sainte-Chapelle, Paris
Made by Dimitry B
The Sainte-Chapelle, the palatine chapel in the courtyard of the royal palace on the Ile de la Cite, was built to house precious relics: Christ's crown of thorns, the Image of Edessa and thirty other relics of Christ that had been in the possession of Louis IX since August 1239, when it arrived from Venice in the hands of two Dominican friars. Unlike many devout aristocrats, who swiped relics, the saintly Louis bought his precious relics of the Passion, purchased from the Latin emperor at Constantinople, Baldwin II, for the exorbitant sum of 135,000 livres, which was paid to the Venetians, to whom it had been pawned. The entire chapel, by contrast, cost 40,000 livres to build and until it was complete the relics were housed at chapels at the Chateau de Vincennes and a specially-built chapel at the Chateau de Saint-Germain-en-Laye. In 1241 a piece of the True Cross was added, and other relics. Thus the building in Paris, consecrated 26 April 1248, was like a precious reliquary: even the stonework was painted, with medallions of saints and martyrs in the quatrefoils of the dado arcade, which was hung with rich textiles. - wiki

France - Paris - Sainte-Chapelle - Upper Chapel Portrait 02
Made by Darrell Godliman
The contrast between the dark and atmospheric Lower Chapel of Sainte-Chapelle and the light filled Upper Chapel makes the spectacular Gothic Architecture even more dramatic. From Wikipedia : The royal chapel was a prime exemplar of the developing culminating phase of Gothic architectural style called Rayonnant that achieved a sense of weightlessness. Its architect is generally thought to have been Pierre de Montereau. It stands squarely upon a lower chapel, which served as parish church for all the inhabitants of the palace, which was the seat of government. The king was later recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church. The most visually beautiful aspects of the chapel, considered the best of their type in the world, are its stained glass, for which the stonework is a delicate framework, and rose windows, added to the upper chapel in the fifteenth century.

Rita Crane Photography: Paris / Ile de la Cite / sunset / silhouette / sky / umbrellas / rain / people / architecture / Rainy Evening at Place du Parvis Notre Dame, Paris
Made by Rita Crane Photography ~ returning slowly
Couldn't believe my eyes when I walked out of the dimly lit beauty of Notre Dame after going to listen to the soprano singing vespers, and into the evening with its soft rain showers. What a wonderful surprise to be greeted by this illuminated sky full of rich color! The shining pavement reflecting a glorious sunset shone against the dark buildings, and people with their umbrellas could be seen in silhouette, facing the direction of the setting sun. Quelle belle surprise inattendue!

St Chappelle - Jewel of a Church
Made by Soller Photo
The many stained glass windows in Saint Chappelle make the main room of this church feel/look like the inside of a jewel. Saint Chappelle is a small church on the same island as the Notre Dame in Paris; about 3 blocks away. Photographing this room was very challenging - it was very dark, and there was virtually no place against which to brace the camera (tripods not allowed). Flash would only diminish the beauty of the windows. My wife was very, very patient while I wandered around, head and camera aimed upward, taking many photos, trying to get a few with the camera steady enough. This WAS our honeymoon, after all. Best viewed large.

2007 - Hey Jude
Made by Sid BlackLizard = Francesco Napoli
Hey Jude, don't make it bad take a sad song and make it better Remember to let her into your heart Then you can start to make it better Hey Jude, don't be afraid You were made to go out and get her The minute you let her under your skin The you begin to make it better -------------------------------------------------- Hey Jude, non peggiorare le cose: prendi una canzone triste e rendila migliore.

France - Paris - Waiter sepia v2
Made by Darrell Godliman
I don't take too many people photos when travelling, and when I do it tends to be with a long zoom. This waiter on a cigarette break just seemed such a (stereo ?) typically Parisian scene that I couldn't resist a quick candid shot. A question I have that someone out there may be able to help me with, yesterday according to my Stats for the first time I had more views of my photos (nearly a 1000) from an unknown source than I had from Flickr or Search Engines. Is this something to be concerned about, or is this just RSS Readers etc ?

Sainte-Chapelle, Paris
Made by Uncle Buddha
The stunning upper chapel, considered to be the pinnacle of Rayonnant Gothic architecture. The Sainte-Chapelle, consecrated in 1248, is really two churches, one stacked on top of the other. You first enter the church through the lower chapel which is smaller and more enclosed, before climbing to the magnificent upper chapel, almost entirely surrounded by towering stained glass windows. The church was ransacked during the French Revolution but faithfully restored by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in 1855.

view from Saint Michel bridge in Paris
Made by *bratan*
here is a pic taken in the heart of Paris where are located famous places like Saint Michel and the latin area, the Conciergerie, the Sainte Chapelle church and the Cathedral Notre Dame. After the bridge you can see and on the right bank of the river la Seine is located the Louvre. This is the original framing with the real sky (contrasted of course). Have a wonderful day :-) (recommended)

France - Paris - Sainte-Chapelle - Lower Chapel Vaulting 05 sq
Made by Darrell Godliman
To give you some idea of just how spectacular the Upper Chapel at Sainte-Chapelle is, I should explain that this is 'just' the lower chapel for the occupants of the palace. Interestingly the identity of the Architect is not confirmed (Pierre de Montereau, I have since found is suspected to be the Architect), somewhat of a contrast to the work of todays 'Starchitects'.

France - Paris - Sainte-Chapelle - Upper Chapel Looking up 05
Made by Darrell Godliman
In some ways High Gothic buildings like Sainte-Chapelle are the forerunners of modern architecture. Here the building is essentially a slender framed structure with glass infills. Even the vaulting expresses the way the structure works, something which 'Hi-tech' Architects like Norman Foster and Richard Rogers made very fashionable with buildings such as the Pompidou.

I've just got back from a little trip to Paris, we had snow on both Tuesday & Wednesday so I didn't get as many shots as I have liked. I made up for it on a sunny Thursday though! Sainte-Chapelle Cathedral
Made by jrtce1 (back from Hawaii)
Sainte Chapelle Cathedral in Paris. Commisioned by King Louis IX and completed in 1248. Taken on my first trip to Europe in 1991. I removed the guardrails, 20 years of dust and scratches, and a dozen tourists to show it as it should really be seen. (I polished the floor a little bit too while I was at it).
