Robie House and The Graduate School of Business, Chicago, IL

Robie House and The Graduate School of Business, Chicago, IL
Made by Grufnik
A panoramic shot of Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House and its neighbor, the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business, designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects and completed in 2004. Viñoly was particularly concerned with the context of the new school, bordered on one side by one of Frank Lloyd Wright's master works, and on the other by the gothic-style Rockefeller Chapel, with its tall carillon. Viñoly's design is centered around a quad enclosed in a greenhouse, the Winter Garden, who's vertical thrust follows the proportions of the lancet windows of the chapel. The roof structure is a quadripartite, pointed vault, built with tubular steel members that also reflects gothic style. To bring the building down in scale and to let Frank Lloyd Wright's work breathe, Viñoly set back each floor, reducing the perceived mass of the building from street–level, and reflecting the residential building across the street. More about Viñoly's building can be found here: www.rvapc.com/ht/HTProject.aspx?Base=Projects&projID=379 The original size allows viewers to see in clearer detail. Museum of Science and Industry (Rear), Chicago, IL

Museum of Science and Industry (Rear), Chicago, IL
Made by Grufnik
The Museum of Science and Industry's Beaux-Arts design was conceived by Charles C. Atwood. The building was built in plaster as a temproary structure for the 1893 World Columbian Exposition as the Palace of Fine Arts. After the fair, the building became home to the Field Museum, until it moved in 1921. In 1926, Julius Rosenwald, owner of Sears, Roebuck & Co., provided 8 million dollars to start a new Industrial museum and to house it in the Palace of Fine Arts. The funding allowed the building to be recast from its original plaster cladding to limestone and marble. The original size allows viewers to see in clear detail all the elements. This is one of the most recent photos I've taken, and it was all the way back in December! Life in Chicago is wonderful ---- far more busy than I ever could have anticipated, but wonderful nonetheless. There are so many things I regret not photographing over the past eight months, so I'm hoping this is the first step in getting back to the way things used to be.

The rest of the University of Chicago is built in a traditional Gothic or neo-Gothic style; pretty much all gray stone, black metal trimming, or oxidized copper and brass. Except these ridiculous new dorms.

One street away on the University of Chicago campus. This is the venue of Doc Films. The theater is to the left of this view.
