Friedensreich Hundertwasser is someone who doesn't seem to be on anybody at the KSA's list of legitimate, respectable architects. I stumbled unto him while Wiki-surfing at my parents' house way back in December 2005, and have been interested ever since...but the only mentions of him in architecture school have been Kipnis declaring (regarding our color projects) Let me tell you what you don't wanna do. You don't wanna do Hundertwasser and Jackie, while driving into Vienna, calling him vulgar and disgusting (a la Hans Hollein) and relating that a friend of hers once ate lunch with the man and was served nothing but various different clay samples from around the world. Consequently, no Hundertwasser work was featured on the tour and I had to track this stuff down on my free days (getting a bit lost in the process, but whatever). But the Viennese love him, and this building along with a couple of others in the area have become major tourist attractions for the city. Obviously part of it is just novelty, but I think it goes deeper than that. Hundertwasser was well-known as a Beat/hippie painter in the 50s and 60s, and it was only in the 80s that he got into architecture. This dilletante-ism probably would be enough to give him a bad reputation in architecture circles.... but it also means that he brings a completely different sensibility to architecture than anyone of his generation, so despite the postmodernist qualities of this stuff, what it looks most like is...the hippie paintings of Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Just to give you an idea of how far his hippieness goes before we get into his architectural value system: His full pseudonym is Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser, an expansion of his born name (Friedrich Stowasser) to something like Peace-Kingdom Rainyday Darkcolor Hundred-water. So he's like that. But I have to say that unlike, say, rock music, architecture is a discipline that has maybe gotten underdosed with zany hippie idealism, and so it's extremely refreshing to see a building like this and then read some of Hundertwasser's aphoristic architectural theory, which I'll quote in some of the succeeding images... [Quotes from the Taschen book on Kunsthauswien.] Note that much of the foundation of his theory was laid in speeches and publications from as early as 1958 (although it's clearly been revised since then, as it mentions postmodernism) - so even setting aside the degree to which his paintings depicted a utopian architectural world, it's clear that this stuff was on his mind long before he had the opportunity to bulid anything. Maybe not such a dilettante after all?

Perhaps the most immediately obvious aspects of Hundertwasser's buildings are the zany, every-one-different columns, and the slightly less zany but still exuberant variety of window sizes, frames, and trim treatments. This turns out to be a key point in Hundertwasser's war against window dictatorship: But should the three window types of the three houses belong to one house, it is seen as a violation of the racial segregation of windows. Why? Each individual window has its own right to life. According to the prevailing code, however, if window races are mixed, window apartheid is infringed. [...] For the repetition of identical windows next to each other and above each other as in a grid system is a characteristic of concentration camps. Hundertwasser also insisted that any tenant in a building should have the right to paint the area around their window however they want, as far as they can reach with their arms. Strangely, this seems not to have happened here - there are obviously a great variety of colors around the windows but they seem self-evidently the work of the single hand of Hundertwasser. Not sure what went wrong. Note that the Mould Manifesto goes even further: He must also be allowed to cut up the walls and make all kinds of changes, even if this disturbs the architectural harmony of a so-called masterwork, and he must be able to fill his room with mud or children’s modelling clay. But the lease prohibits this! Dangit!

It is located in the district of Landstrasse, south of downtown. The artist wanted to give happiness and joy of living in 50 apartments of the poor people of the town, building the various structures using soft lines. Throughout the complex there are in fact sharp edges. The facades are painted in bright colors and decorated with colorful ceramics. In all there are terrace gardens that serve to bring the green in every home. The creation of the latter, in particular, is an explicit reference to one of the key concepts of the artist, that anything that expands horizontally belongs to nature and everything that rises to heaven and man. Many materials, such as, for example, the ceramics decoration of the facades, are recovered. Hundertwasser houses have become a real tourist attraction, attracting thousands of tourists each year have risen so much so that shops, bars, kiosks and cafes nearby. In the gallery Hundertwasserhaus you can stop to enjoy a coffee (watch the stream coming down from the wall through the entire counter), or enjoy some traditional Viennese specialties. Even the toilets are stylish, in fact, are part of the Toilet of modern art where decorative pottery, fountains and bright colors make this too cheerful and pleasant environment.

Hundertwasserhaus (Hundertwasser House), now called Hundertwasser-Krawinahaus, Wien (Vienna), Austria. text from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hundertwasserhaus: The Hundertwasser-Krawinahaus, formerly known as the HundertwasserHaus Wien is an apartment house in Vienna, Austria, designed by Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Joseph Krawina. (...) The house was built between 1983 and 1986 by architects Univ.-Prof. Joseph Krawina and Peter Pelikan. It features undulating floors (an uneven floor is a divine melody to the feet), a roof covered with earth and grass, and large trees growing from inside the rooms, with limbs extending from windows. Hundertwasser took no payment for the design of the house, declaring that it was worth it, to prevent something ugly from going up in its place. Within the house there are 52 apartments, four offices, 16 private terraces and three communal terraces, and a total of 250 trees and bushes. The Hundertwasser House is one of Vienna's most visited buildings and has become part of Austria's cultural heritage.

Hundertwasser takes the celebrated Modernist idea of the roof garden and decides to take it seriously, making his bulidings appear almost as if they're the afterthought to the hanging gardens. Or, as he writes: We must again build houses where nature is above us. It is our duty to put the nature we murder when we build a house back onto the roof. We must give territories back to nature which we have taken from her illegally. The nature we put on the roof is the piece of earth that we murdered by putting the house there in the first place. Moreover, the trees he has growing behind and from the windows of the building are tree tenants: The tree tenant pays his rent in much more valuable currency than humans do: 1. Tree tenants create oxygen. [...] 3. Tree tenants act like vacuum cleaners and more. They swallow even the finest and poisonous dust. There is less dust in the apartment and in the street. [...] 7. Birds and butterflies come back.... [et cetera]
