Huayna Picchu
Interesting places in Huayna Picchu:
Huayna Picchu or Wayna Picchu (Quechua: "Young Peak") is a mountain in Peru around which the Urubamba River bends. It rises over Machu Picchu, the so-called "lost city of the Incas," and divides it into sections. The Incas built a trail up the side of the Huayna Picchu and built temples and terraces on its top.

Peru Day 08 064 Wayna Picchu Climb
Made by TravelShorts
The eighth day of my trip to Peru and Easter Island. My climb of Wayna Picchu (Huayna Picchu) the mountain behind Machu Picchu. I found climbing it quite easy, what tired me out was going to the Temple of the Moon and Grand Cavern behind the mountain and then climbing back from there with very little water. Huayna Picchu or Wayna Picchu (Quechua: Young Peak) is a mountain in Peru around which the Urubamba River bends. It rises over Machu Picchu, the so-called lost city of the Incas and divides it into sections. The Incas built a trail up the side of the Huayna Picchu and built temples and terraces on its top. The peak of Huayna Picchu is about 2,720 metres (8,920 ft) above sea level, or about 360 metres (1,180 ft) higher than Machu Picchu. According to local guides, the top of the mountain was the residence for the high priest and the local virgins. Every morning before sunrise, the high priest with a small group would walk to Machu Picchu to signal the coming of the new day. The Temple of the Moon, one of the three major temples in the Machu Picchu area, is nestled on the side of the mountain and is situated at an elevation lower than Machu Picchu. Adjacent to the Temple of the Moon is the Great Cavern, another sacred temple with fine masonry. This is a picture of Macchu Picchu taken from the Wayna Picchu mountain. As an experiment I took many pictures (around 10) of this target without a tripod, so I have to align them before to use the [Smart Object \ Stack Mode \ Median] PS feature to remove some tourist walking around. I also used the Average stack mode to get more definition and reduce the noise in the other parts. , you will find at the bottom end a girl doing yoga and in the center another one taking a pic of her friend. Drag the map to above and you will find MP.

Looking Back from Huayna Picchu

The ruins look strangely small looking back from atop Huayna Picchu. Huayna Picchu is the more photographed peak that sits behind the main ruins of Machu Picchu. Here terraces and stairs and more structures are built high atop the peak and on the side of sheer cliffs. You can also see that entire mountain is covered in ruins with new archaeological sites being exposed further down the slope.

Obenauf

The view from Huayna Picchu back on Machu Picchu. Okay to be honest, I didn't make it to the summit of Huayna Picchu. Fear of heights had already had more of a hold on me by the time a freakish Peruvian Fall rainstorm came tearing into the Urubamba Valley. I was nearly washed off the mountain, something like a Temple rat hanging on during a flood.

Huayna Picchu, Close Up, Peru

The fact that the Incas constructed buildings and stone staircases on the top of the Young Mountain with its shear drops is beyond my comprehension. There are daily climbs to the ruins, which is only for those with strong stomachs and mountain goat sureness of foot...not to mention that the summit is 9,000 feet above sea level.

what the hell am i doing up here?

Journal - 16 Nov 05 - 08:52 Marcellino took us on a 2-hour tour of the ruins and we heard a few more stories. Once our tour was done we were given free reign and Colin (a Brit) and I decided we hadn't had enough hiking so we climbed 300 metres of vertical to summit Wayna Picchu, the mountain that overlooks the ruins of MP.

Machu Picchu (Old Peak in Quechua) as seen from the neighboring mountain Huayna Picchu (Young Peak) at 2720 m, about 350 m higher than Machu Picchu. At far left is the visitors center where tourist buses come in. People walking the Inca Trail approach the site on the path in the top left of the picture (barely visible).

Our hike up Wyna Picchu was difficult but surprisingly quick! We reached the top after one challenging hour of scrambling up stone stairs and navigating around sharp switchbacks. The view was incredible. We could see all of Machu Picchu (above), as well as the stunning mountains, valleys, and rivers for miles around.

Gostei do resultado desse crop. O que mais me agradou foi a sensação de que os dois planos (esquerdo inferior e superior) estarem na mesma altura, principalmente perto da escada. Ah, peguei um programinha da Adobe chamado LightRoom. Para quem não conhece, recomendo experimentar!

Afraid of Heights?
Made by zvonar
High atop of Wayna Picchu, the taller of the two mountains overlooking the city of Machu Picchu, there were these huge stone buildings. They're still standing more than a hundred years after they were constructed by hand and without the use of any modern technology!

From the Top of Huayna Picchu

A view of the city of Machu Picchu from the top of Huanya Picchu. Some say that the city was laid out in the shape of a condor (one of the sacred animals on the Inkan totem -- along with the puma and snake). I think it looks more like a mutant turkey from here.
