O Mary, at last you has possession of thy Son. Now, when His enemies can do no more, they leave Him in contempt to thee. The hats of past Chicago archbishops, called galeros, hang from the ceiling until they turn to dust, signifying that all earthly glory is temporary (from the cathedral's self-guided tour pamphlet). After Vatican II galeros were no longer issued to archbishops but the post-Vatican II archbishops had galeros made anyway as part of tradition.
