Back in May I spent two days in Vienna running around like a headless chicken. I remember the evening when I made this picture. There was a really nice sky, and I was hurrying to find a good spot. All the nice spots were on the opposite side of the sunset. When I got to this courtyard I had to shoot it even though it was backlit and the building was completely dark. I remember the awesome sky over the buildings, and like all buildings in Vienna, this one was very pretty and nicely kept. I took 7 shots to capture the full dynamic range. Unfortunately, even the brightest shot did not get good detail on the statue. Photomatix made a mess of the sky because the clouds had moved quite a bit between the first and last exposure. So, I replaced the sky with one from the original shots. It had good details, but the colors didn't match the Photomatix image. So, I blended the sky from the Photomatix shot again, but using the Color blending mode. So the sky has the tones from a clean shot, and the colors from Photomatix. I used Vertus Fluid Mask to do the sky cutout. This was my first try without even reading the manual, so the results are a bit rough. Given that the fountain didn't look natural, I decided to over-process the whole image, and applied a 30% Nik Tonal Contrast, and high contrast using Pro Contrast and curves with a luminosity mask. I also put a slight graduated coffee filter on the sky to make the clouds more yellow, and burned the stones in the front. I hope you like it. I had fun working on it. .

(Wikipedia)

English en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schatzkammer_(Vienna) The Imperial Treasury Schatzkammer in Vienna is located in the Hofburg Palace, the entrance is at the Schweizer Hof (Swiss Courtyard). This Schatzkammer houses a collection of 1,000 years of treasures. The display was completely renovated in 1983-1987. The Treasury is divided into two sections - Secular and Ecclesiastical. The museum contains a collection of royal objects: the insignia and jewels of the Holy Roman Empire, including the Imperial Crown and the Holy Lance, the Crown of Emperor Rudolf II (which later on became Crown of the Austrian Empire), as well as the vestments and other precious items of the Order of the Golden Fleece. On display are various valuable gems, including one of the world's largest emeralds. Part of the treasury are also the two “inalienable heirlooms of the House of Austria”: a giant narwhal tooth which was thought to be the horn of a unicorn and an agate bowl from Late Antiquity which was thought to be the legendary Holy Grail. Giulio Carlo Argan Antonio Canova. Tomb of Maria Christine of Austria Augustinerkirche (St. Augustine's Church), Vienna 1798-1805 «That white pyramid is neither a symbol nor an emblem, it's the model of an absolute shape where the characters' relative forms strain. Putting themselves in a direct relation with that absolute shape, each character gain a sense of absolute: something of death's neverendingness mix with the relativity of life's semblances» Giulio Carlo Argan

Palmenhaus - Burggaten (Vienna)

Palmenhaus - Burggaten (Vienna)
Made by Enrico P.
In 1822 a 128 meter long greenhouse was erected, in the Hofburg palace gardens, incorporating part of the old city wall. In 1901 the architect Friedrich Ohman was comissioned to build the splendid Jugendstil palmhouse which stands on the site today, which replaced the original structure. It took five years to build Ohmans creation, which is now a major tourist attraction in its own right. It is perhaps the most beautiful Jugendstil greenhouse ever built. By 1988 the building had fallen into disrepair and was closed to the public. Ten years and $17m later the refurbished building was reopened to the public. The 2050 sqm. building houses plants used to decorate official functions, one of Viennas most popular restaurants and of course the tropical butterfly house.

I think I will post a little part of this 600 photos in next weeks or months on FlickR. Statue with crowning rays (1 of 2)
Made by Thiophene_Guy
The crowning rays, reminiscent of the Statue of Liberty, caught my attention. The superior visage seems disdainful from this perspective, as though admonishing the onlooker for taking a photo. A fuzzy closeup, from a different perspective, may be found . Regrettably, I did not record artist or subject information. However, this figure may be found in Vienna at one entrance to the library, beside this view. If you have a different shot or more info let me know - I will post a link to it here.

the Schatzkammer in Vienna houses the crowns and relics and vestments of the Holy Roman Empire and the Austrian Empire. The Holy Lance - reputedly the lance that pierced Jesus' side - the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire (a sacred symbol of sovereignty once moved on Hitler's orders), and the Saber of Charlemagne can be viewed. Also housed is the Burgundian Treasure, connected with the medieval order of chivalry, the Order of the Golden Fleece, the Ecclesiastical Treasury (Geistliche Schatzkammer), and the private collections of the Habsburgs.

When I arrived in Vienna last Saturday, it was cool and pouring down with rain. Perfect weather to spend the afternoon in the Schmetterlingshaus (butterfly house). Wherever you looked, there were butteflies, and there was a whole bunch of beautiful, big, black and blue ones that kept dancing, usually in pairs, around the room. Because they're so used to people, it was so easy to take pictures of them. A perfect start to my long weekend in Vienna. And by the time I left, the rain had stopped and the following three days were sunny and summery hot.

This was a 3 exposure shot HDR'd in photomatix. the shot was taken at least a 1/4 of a mile away by the Hofburg palace using my 50-150mm FX sigma lens @105mm. I had the camera on a monopod with it's tripod legs out. I have to say the sharpness and ability to hold the camera still for this 3 shot blend was pretty cool if i don't mind saying so myself. The building is the Rathaus Vienna, which I understand is their town hall....As per usual I mess up the spelling. This goes back a long way. Sorry.beginning to be my photographic signature.......

Waiting my horse. Spanish Riding School. Vienna
Made by Abariltur
Just like 400 years ago, the horses are trained in Vienna by riders of the Spanish Riding School, and are then presented to millions of interested spectators from all over the world. The bloodlines of the Lipizzaner stallions at the Spanish Riding School can be traced back to the 18th century and have never been interrupted. There is no other horse breed in the world with equally high breeding and training standards. Vienna/ Wien (Austria).

This is one very beautiful place. So many beautiful butterflies. This photo was taken from a walkway which is in the middle of it. Immediately when I entered it mist condensated on my lens from all the water in the air, so I had to clean it, take a shot and immediately clean it again :). it's much like Canova's tomb for Titian in Venice. Of (Canova's) cenotaphs and funeral monuments the most splendid is the monument to the archduchess Maria Christina of Austria, consisting of nine figures. Archduchess Maria Christina was Maria Theresa's favorite daughter, the only one allowed to marry for love. She and her husband were governors of the Austrian Netherlands (Belgium). She is not actually buried in this structure.

An elegant carriage, a driver with a bowlerhat and two beautiful horses: that´s what makes a Fiaker and the most traditional and romantic way for you to discover Vienna. You can drive through the Inner City just like in the old times of the Empire. You will move quickly but still slowly enough to relish all the sights on your way. Fiakers are available at Stephansplatz. Wien/ Vienna (Austria).

In Vienna, fiaker means two very different things: a fiacre but also an espresso with rum, topped with whipped cream. A Vienne, le mot fiaker a un double sens : soit le fiacre ou un espresso avec du rhum et de la crême fraîche. The House on Michaelerplatz, Vienna by Loos. It was a photo of the entrance space of Looshaus. I kept the column, flooring and the girl and removed rest. then i wanted paint some background, which got quite messy and so ended up using texture and this brush to repair all that.
