Himeji-jo: Arquebus & Yari

The Portugese matchlock rifle, or arquebus, played a vital role in Japan's history. Here you see some matchlocks inside Himeji-jo. Next to these guns, you can also see some yari--spears that could attain lengths of as much as 15 feet. Himeji-jo is perhaps the most well known castle in Japan. It has remained in its current condition for almost 400 years. Unlike other Japanese castles, this one has not been damaged by warfare--and that includes WWII. The White Heron castle was originally constructed in 1333, but later improved by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and later by Terumasa Ikeda, a son-in-law of Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Himeji Castle is widely considered Japan's most spectacular castle. Unlike many other Japanese castles, Himeji Castle was never destroyed in wars, earthquakes or fires and survives in its original form. It is both, a national treasure and a UNESCO world heritage site. It's a very impressive castle. .
