Edmonton High Level Bridge - Great Divide Waterfall

Edmonton High Level Bridge - Great Divide Waterfall
Made by Edmonton Economic Development Corporation
The Great Divide Waterfall began as an artist’s concept to salute the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. City artist, Peter Lewis designed a system to draw water from the North Saskatchewan River up to the High Level Bridge through a series of pipes. The water would then spill over a trough and cascade down from the bridge creating a waterfall to the river below. The plan was turned down due to technical problems which meant insufficient time to complete the project for the Games. Lewis modified his design, and on May 27, 1980, Edmonton’s City Council approved construction of the Great Divide Waterfall to mark the celebration of Alberta’s 75th Anniversary. On September 1, 1980, the Great Divide Waterfall was officially turned on for the first time by Mayor C.J. Purves. The Great Divide Waterfall is now turned on every long weekend through out the summer in celebration of holiday events. www.edmonton.com www.edmonton.ca

River Valley Sunset

Was heading across the high level bridge today to a friend's place and the sky was doing ALL KINDS of amazing. So I stopped. ran back and grabbed this shot. This is also one of my first experiments with HDR... I'm happy I think. I really didn't expect how uber much noise it would create though!! Note to flickr: I love that sometimes you try and save me from myself by subtely playing with destroyed white balances and by sharpening images I upload. Sometimes however I would like to reserve my artistic rigt to totally blow the white balance if I want to. Fortunately Picnik was there to help save the day. :-)

Forever Love

We've all seen the carvings of hearts replete with name created by lovestruck couples in trees, wood fences etc. Today I saw something new, unique and very cute. This couple wrote their monikers, a heart, the date and the word forever on this lock and locked it to the high level bridge for the world to see. I don't know who they are, but they brightened my day and I wish them well. :-) I'll dedicate this one to everyone in love. I hope your love brings you lots of joy.

The High Level Bridge: for traveling in vehicles, cycling, walking, staring longingly into the horizon, and for capturing with a camera. There's so much stuff in the River! Song: Why do you let me stay here? by She & Him. Thought it was fitting somehow. (as a side - I hope I'm getting better at this video thing)

I shot this photo walking back from the University of Alberta golden bears versus Oiler rookies hockey game. Even with my 50mm f/1.4 lens and a high ISO, I had some troubles taking some hand held shots ... but this one turned out a little better than alright, I think. There's a couple more that turned out pretty well. The LRT bridge is rather pretty at night, I think!

Trying to focus on the beauty beyond the bars [high level bridge, Edmonton]. While I understand the need for metal barricades on structures that stand far above a moving current, and in places, traffic, I don't enjoy their placement between me and what's on the other side.

Mechanical Engineering is visible from the high level bridge since Physics and CSR have been demolished. The top of NINT is visible above the low part of Biology. See my picture for the view back to here from the Mechanical Engineering building.

Taken from the middle of the High Level bridge on the ridiculously scary side. I don't know who's idea it was to have the gaurd rail on the East side of the bridge substantially lower than on the West, but it freaks me out.

As if the title doesn't give this away ... peeling paint on Edmonton's High Level Bridge. Something about this particular beam with the sunlight and blackness just caught my eye. Click on photo to view on black.

At least, I want to believe that's what is starting here. If you're all in love with someone, you should take a moment to clip a lock here. A kiss at this spot would be tres romantic.

the teeny people walking away in this photo turned out to be Glenn Groulx and his family. Glenn was totally NOT skipping workshops at CeLC2010 (nor were Alan and I).
