Edmonton High Level Bridge - Great Divide Waterfall

Edmonton High Level Bridge - Great Divide Waterfall
Made by Edmonton Live All Year
The Great Divide Waterfall began as an artist’s concept to salute the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. City artist, Peter Lewis designed a system to draw water from the North Saskatchewan River up to the High Level Bridge through a series of pipes. The water would then spill over a trough and cascade down from the bridge creating a waterfall to the river below. The plan was turned down due to technical problems which meant insufficient time to complete the project for the Games. Lewis modified his design, and on May 27, 1980, Edmonton’s City Council approved construction of the Great Divide Waterfall to mark the celebration of Alberta’s 75th Anniversary. On September 1, 1980, the Great Divide Waterfall was officially turned on for the first time by Mayor C.J. Purves. The Great Divide Waterfall is now turned on every long weekend through out the summer in celebration of holiday events. www.edmonton.travel www.edmonton.ca

Trying to focus on the beauty beyond the bars [high level bridge, Edmonton]. While I understand the need for metal barricades on structures that stand far above a moving current, and in places, traffic, I don't enjoy their placement between me and what's on the other side.
