(uncut) The Spaardammerbuurt is a quarter constructed in the twenties of the last century for the workers of the quickly expanding harbour and industry. Depicted here are the sculpted sweeping lines of “Het Schip” (the ship) a typical example of Amsterdam School architecture. It’s a building block which integrates houses, a school and a post office. It was conmpleted in 1921.The nickname was selected because its morphology. The sculpted and non-functionalist, expressionistic architecture of the Amsterdam school was the romantic reaction to the then very popular functionalistic stark forms of modernist design which preached “form follows function”. In the Amsterdam School architects saw buildings as sculptures and works of art in their own right. The function of a building came second. Elaborate and sweeping brick constructions were often used. Organic forms were a strong inspiration. There was however a very modern aspect to the Amsterdam school, but it is hidden in the construction – on crucial points in the building reinforced concrete provides the necessary strength. The Ship was designed by Michel de Klerk, one of the most prominent architects of the Amsterdam School.

This picture was taken in the former postoffice, situated in one of the most expressionist apartment blocks in Amsterdam. It is located at the Spaarndammerplantsoen and called Het Schip (The Ship). It has been built in the years 1911-1920 and was designed for the housing association Eigen Haard by the architect Michel de Klerk. This is a staff-only door at Michel de Klerk's post office in Michel de Klerk's public housing block Het Schip. Sadly the time of public housing of this quality and with integrated post offices is long gone; this building is from 1919. The post office has been long turned into a museum. But look at it! A tongue in cheek door with a visually descriptive sign. It's like a cartoon sketch in pigeon blue, a reminder of the colour of carrier pigeons in the time of emerging telephone communication.

Hembrugstraat. Aan de achterkant van Het Schip loopt het gebouw een eindje naar binnen, zodat een driehoekig pleintje ontstaat. Op de binnehoek van dit pleintje wordt het gebouw bekroond met een ranke toren, helemaal bekleed met vertikale dakpannen. Op de begane grond onder de toren heeft Museum Het Schip een museumwoning, een soort modelwoning ingericht. Daar kun je zien hoe men hier in de eerste helft van de twintigste eeuw woonde, zie volgende foto's.

Oostzaanstraat. Het eerste echte portiek in gebouw Het Schip, gerekend vanaf het Spaarndammerplantsoen. De nummering is blijkbaar in de loop van de tijd veranderd: dit portiek heeft als oude nummer 11, terwijl de woningen tegenwoordig andere huisnummers hebben. Waar je vroeger woonde op 11 tweehoog achter is dat nu 27 geworden, zonder toevoegingen (bijvoorbeeld)

It just so happens that our new apartment is surrounded by Amsterdam School buildings so we thought we should visit the museum to get an idea of how they were furnished. It is remarkable how similar it was to the Arts and Crafts movement in North America.

Part of it is a museum now, they redecorated an apartment and the former postoffice into its original state. (Museum het schip. Worth a visit) I drew this during a trip with colleague architects from BNA south to Amsterdam.

Hembrugstraat. Nog een authentiek element op het binnenpleintje achter de museumwoning: een wringer, de vroegere versie van de wasdroger. Op het rek eronder stond aan de ene kant het natte wasgoed, bijvoorbeeld in een teil. Aan de andere kant werd het opgevangen in een andere teil

Oostzaanstraat 45. De Klerk heeft gebouw Het Schip om een bestaande school heengebouwd. Dat was de openbare kleuterschool De Veulens, tegenwoordig een basisschool. Vandaar deze gebeeldhouwde hoofden van veulens in de gevel, gemaakt door de toenmalige stadsbeeldhouwer Hildo Krop
