The Hatch Shell, along the Charles River Esplanade, was constructed in 1941 to the design of Notter, Finegold & Alexander, Inc. Boston's epicenter for large outdoor performances and open-air events, the Hatch Shell achieved national recognition for the annual Boston Independence Day concert by the Boston Pops. The art deco ampitheater is 40-feet high, 110-feet wide (160-feet including the stair base) and finished in rustic terrazzo. It front a 90,000 square-foot-lawn.
