Dit bronzen beeld, ontworpen door Robert Vandereycken in opdracht van het Koninklijk Leesgezelschap, is een hulde aan de nog steeds bestaande Hasseltse reus. Door de persoonlijke interpretatie van de kunstenaar wijkt dit beeld af van de grotere originele figuur. Het beeld werd onthuld op 7 september 1982. De Langeman is sterk verweven met de folklore van Hasselt en is eigendom van de rederijkerskamer De Roode Roos. De reuzen bekleden reeds sinds de 14de eeuw een bijzondere plaats in het volksleven. De reuzenstoet zou een voortzetting zijn van een Keltische plechtigheid. De oudste reuzen, waaronder de Hasseltse Langeman, leefden altijd alleen en waren gedoemd tot het ouwe jonkmansleven. In het begin verlieten zij nooit hun woning. Uitzonderingen warende kerkelijke feesten, de processies en ommegangen. Later vertoonden ze zich ook in het openbaar als de vorst de gemeente met een bezoek vereerde. De Langeman zag het daglicht voor het jaar 1500 en bracht zijn jeugd door bij de gezellen van het smedenambacht. In 1515 werd hij lid van de rederijkerskamer De Roode Roos. Intussen was het al zo dat hij verschillende namen droeg waaronder Goliath, Goliam, Faradon. Vanaf 1810 werd er Don Christophe aan toegevoegd. Deze naam verwijst naar Sint-Christophorus, patroon van de schuttersgilden, waartoe eertijds ook de rederijkers behoorden. Reeds in de vroege eeuwen verscheen de Langeman in processies. Hij nam deel aan de Blijde Inkomsten van de vorsten en aan de uitdeling van erwtensoep met spek, ter gelegenheid van de Zevenjaarlijkse Virga-Jessefeesten. Dit gebruik hebben we te danken aan Hendrik Dries, een handelaar uit Zonhoven, die daarvoor in 1508 een legaat aan de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwkerk, nu de Virga-Jessebasiliek, schonk. De Langeman, de reus uit 1810, wordt bewaard in Het Stadsmus. In 2010 - tijdens de volgende Virga-Jessefeesten - komt de Langeman weer naar buiten en die uitstap valt samen met zijn 200ste verjaardag. Hij is dus met voorsprong de oudste nog levende Hasselaar. Langeman or giants have an important role in the city's life since the 14th century. They lived alone, never got married and only came outside during a procession.

Tuur Van Balen & Revital Cohen inside the DIY bio shed Ready-to-use Models (2011) - Revital Cohen Ready-to-use Models is Cohen’s new research project, developed for Alter Nature: The Unnatural Animal. With this installation, Cohen seeks to question the current defini- tions used to indicate living creatures. Does one denomi- nate a manipulated organism as an object, product, animal or pet? What consequences does this choice of definition entail for our perceptions, feelings and behaviours regard- ing these living creatures? Laboratories deploy animals in the development of medicines. Much in the same way as products, rodents for various experiments can be ordered from online catalogues. In this research experiment, Cohen examines the nature of the SERT Knock-out rats. These rats are manipulated to not be able to absorb serotonin, the hormone responsible for feelings of contentment and happiness, and therefore consistently display increased levels of anxiety- and depres- sion-like behaviours. For a species regarded as disposable product, Cohen has built a large play cage in which the environment is de- signed to boost the serotonin levels, in attempt to make the rat happy. With this futile and absurd intervention, Ready- to-use Models questions the exchange of roles between animal and object. inside the DIY bio shed Tuur Van Balen Cook me. Black Bile (2011) For Alter Nature: The Unnatural Animal, Van Balen is developing Cook Me. Black Bile, a new research project which continues to build on the themes addressed in his earlier work. Referencing old medical practices of control- led bloodletting to maintain the balance between the body fluids (Hippocrates), Van Balen releases a leech onto his arm. He later prepares a hearty meal using the blood- filled leech as his main ingredient. Black Bile refers to one of the four body fluids as determined by Hippocrates in his theory of the four humours (slime, blood, yellow bile and black bile). The balance between these fluids would not only determine physical health, but also influence the mental condition of each person. Black bile, for instance, is linked to the feature of melancholy (in Greek μελαγχολία, or literally black bile). Bloodletting was one of the main tools to maintain the physical and mental balance of each individual. The project proposes new interactions with one’s metabolism, through biosensing and biosynthesis, similar to the Synthetic Immune System. In Cook Me. Black Bile, these interactions are proposed as new forms of cooking with cooking experiments, new recipes and cooking tools, as can be seen in the shed. In the Transgenic Orange Pheasant project, Adam Zaretsky proposes in a letter to His Royal Highness Prince Willem-Alexander to create a “Royal Dutch Transgenic Breeding Facility at the Gorleaus Laboratory in the University of Leiden. These orange pheasants could be intended for the royal hunt. In this installation, four images of transgenic pheasants are shown, alongside a genegun, shotgun, the letter to His Royal Highness Prince Willem-Alexander and two videos. The manipulations required in this project go beyond the creation of orange carrots. Though certain practices are rather ‘common practice’ inside the walls of the laboratory, they certainly are not outside of this context. How far can one go in the creation of a ‘royal aesthetic’? So it is going to take some time. If you looking in one of my sets and you can not see all of my photo's, don't panic, just run a slideshow then. I’m going to place all the photo’s in a set and in a collection. So, the title that stands before the dubble Point is the name of the set where the Photo is placed in. I’m using the normal Flickr Uploader and somehow my photo’s are scrambled so forgive me if you see the hotel in the middle of the voyage. In de Raamstraat in Hasselt ligt de zogenaamde 'Brandewijnketel'. Zo werd het gebouw, dat bekend werd als stokerij Smeets, al genoemd in de 18de eeuw toen de voorname Hasseltse familie Van Elsrack er een stokerij in onder bracht. Midden 19de eeuw lag het pand, dat al een tijdlang geen stokerijfunctie meer had, er erg vervallen bij. Maar in 1885 redde de familie Vanstraelen het geheel van de slopershamer. De zwaar vervallen gebouwen werden zelfs vernieuwd en ingericht als mouterij. Het huidige gebouw is trouwens een schoolvoorbeeld van de 19de eeuwse functionele bedrijfsarchitectuur, een schitterend overblijfsel van de industriele archeologie. Stoker Vinckenbosch nam het pand over en via de familie Brepoels werd jeneverstokerij Smeets eigenaar. Tot voor enkele jaren stookte Smeets nog geregeld op de installatie, maar ook die bladzijde is definitief gedraaid. Shiki 1 shows a bonsai pine tree in a metal frame. Bonsai cultivation is one of the oldest forms of conscious manipulation of nature for aesthetic reasons. Via low-tech techniques such as branch pruning, root pruning, and guided growth of stems and trunks, a tree is reduced to an elegant plant. The metal frame in which the bonsai is placed, refers to the (legal) context within which manipulations of nature occur, and/or nature is placed. The exotic connotation of a palm tree immediately transfers a warm holiday feeling, even in the middle of winter. The work brings us back to the beginning of the exhibition; the displacing of nature and the idea of nature as paradise. The Common Flowers project is based on and uses the first commercially available genetically altered flower, the carnation. The bouquet of flowers is surrounded by a series of cultivation beds, in which pieces of the flower are bred in nutritious tissue culture fluids. Common Flowers, Flower commons addresses the question of property: can one become an owner of nature? Can one create a version of this flower that can be distributed in nature? And what with the patent if someone does this? Above, in the hanging sheds, one can find research work-in-progress installa tions commissioned by Z33. The floating spaces reference the playfulness of tree houses, the uncanniness of domestic homes flying in a hurricane, and the experimental nature of Do-It-Yourself bio garden sheds. In Frozen Pine, a Z33 commission, a bonsai pine tree is ‘freeze-sprayed’ and presented in an especially designed refrigerator. The icicles slowly extract the colour from the bonsai tree – the bonsai dies, but its beauty is preserved in optimum conditions.
