De Langeman - Hasselt

Dit bronzen beeld, ontworpen door Robert Vandereycken in opdracht van het Koninklijk Leesgezelschap, is een hulde aan de nog steeds bestaande Hasseltse reus. Door de persoonlijke interpretatie van de kunstenaar wijkt dit beeld af van de grotere originele figuur. Het beeld werd onthuld op 7 september 1982. De Langeman is sterk verweven met de folklore van Hasselt en is eigendom van de rederijkerskamer De Roode Roos. De reuzen bekleden reeds sinds de 14de eeuw een bijzondere plaats in het volksleven. De reuzenstoet zou een voortzetting zijn van een Keltische plechtigheid. De oudste reuzen, waaronder de Hasseltse Langeman, leefden altijd alleen en waren gedoemd tot het ouwe jonkmansleven. In het begin verlieten zij nooit hun woning. Uitzonderingen warende kerkelijke feesten, de processies en ommegangen. Later vertoonden ze zich ook in het openbaar als de vorst de gemeente met een bezoek vereerde. De Langeman zag het daglicht voor het jaar 1500 en bracht zijn jeugd door bij de gezellen van het smedenambacht. In 1515 werd hij lid van de rederijkerskamer De Roode Roos. Intussen was het al zo dat hij verschillende namen droeg waaronder Goliath, Goliam, Faradon. Vanaf 1810 werd er Don Christophe aan toegevoegd. Deze naam verwijst naar Sint-Christophorus, patroon van de schuttersgilden, waartoe eertijds ook de rederijkers behoorden. Reeds in de vroege eeuwen verscheen de Langeman in processies. Hij nam deel aan de Blijde Inkomsten van de vorsten en aan de uitdeling van erwtensoep met spek, ter gelegenheid van de Zevenjaarlijkse Virga-Jessefeesten. Dit gebruik hebben we te danken aan Hendrik Dries, een handelaar uit Zonhoven, die daarvoor in 1508 een legaat aan de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwkerk, nu de Virga-Jessebasiliek, schonk. De Langeman, de reus uit 1810, wordt bewaard in Het Stadsmus. In 2010 - tijdens de volgende Virga-Jessefeesten - komt de Langeman weer naar buiten en die uitstap valt samen met zijn 200ste verjaardag. Hij is dus met voorsprong de oudste nog levende Hasselaar. Langeman or giants have an important role in the city's life since the 14th century. They lived alone, never got married and only came outside during a procession.

Gebroken hartje, Dicentra spectabilis, Venus's car, bleeding heart Dicentra spectabilis also known as Venus's car, bleeding heart, Dutchman's trousers, or lyre flower, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to eastern Asia from Siberia south to Japan. This species of bleeding heart can grow to 24-36 tall and has ternately compound leaves (leaflets that come in threes). The flowers are pendulous, shaped much like hearts, produced in a raceme bearing 3-15 individual flowers, each one 1-2 long, with pink outer petals and white inner petals. The flowering season is from early spring to mid summer. The common name of this plant, bleeding heart, comes from the heart-shaped flowers which have a longer inner petal that extends below the 'heart'. Het gebroken hartje (Dicentra spectabilis) is een plant die al heel lang in cultuur is. Het is een 60–80 cm hoge vaste plant. Aan de sappige, rijk vertakte, opgaande stengels bevinden zich grijsgroene bladeren die zijn samengesteld uit meerdere, tamelijk grote, drietallige deelblaadjes. Een goed ontwikkelde plant kan na verloop van tijd een ruimte van circa 1 m² innemen. Het blad sterft echter vrij vroeg in het jaar af en laat dan een grote leegte achter. Het gebroken hartje bloeit van mei tot juni. De roze tot rozerode bloemen met wit centrum hangen naast elkaar aan de lange, overhangende bloemstengels. De twee buitenste, roze kroonbladeren vormen samen een hartje, terwijl de twee binnenste, witte kroonblaadjes eindigen in een traantje, dat vanuit het hartje tevoorschijn komt. De witte kroonblaadjes omgeven de stempel en de meeldraden. Het gebroken hartje komt van nature voor in China, Korea en Oost-Siberië, waar hij groeit op open plekken in vochtige bossen en licht beschaduwde bosranden. Het gebroken hartje wordt net als Dicentra formosa veel aangeboden als tuinplant. Er bestaat ook een cultivar met volledig witte bloemen en lichter gekleurd blad (Dicentra spectabilis 'Alba').

Tuur Van Balen & Revital Cohen inside the DIY bio shed Ready-to-use Models (2011) - Revital Cohen Ready-to-use Models is Cohen’s new research project, developed for Alter Nature: The Unnatural Animal. With this installation, Cohen seeks to question the current defini- tions used to indicate living creatures. Does one denomi- nate a manipulated organism as an object, product, animal or pet? What consequences does this choice of definition entail for our perceptions, feelings and behaviours regard- ing these living creatures? Laboratories deploy animals in the development of medicines. Much in the same way as products, rodents for various experiments can be ordered from online catalogues. In this research experiment, Cohen examines the nature of the SERT Knock-out rats. These rats are manipulated to not be able to absorb serotonin, the hormone responsible for feelings of contentment and happiness, and therefore consistently display increased levels of anxiety- and depres- sion-like behaviours. For a species regarded as disposable product, Cohen has built a large play cage in which the environment is de- signed to boost the serotonin levels, in attempt to make the rat happy. With this futile and absurd intervention, Ready- to-use Models questions the exchange of roles between animal and object. So it is going to take some time. If you looking in one of my sets and you can not see all of my photo's, don't panic, just run a slideshow then. I’m going to place all the photo’s in a set and in a collection. So, the title that stands before the dubble Point is the name of the set where the Photo is placed in. I’m using the normal Flickr Uploader and somehow my photo’s are scrambled so forgive me if you see the hotel in the middle of the voyage. I've read the book, and I remember the clown and the giant bird and so... but I must have forgotten the chapter about the giant bath duck appearing at the local yachting club... _________________________________ A new bath duck ! In 2009, artist Florentijn Hofman made a giant bath duck, Badeend, which made a very successful tour through Limburg along the Albertkanaal. It was admired by thousands of people, but it also got vandalized (several times), restored, moved, showed and finally cut up and recycled into designer handbags. In 2010, a new bath duck appeared in the Kanaalkom in Hasselt. It's made by the same artist and it will be the mascotte for a project Z-Out (like the Z33 museum) about art in public space. I think it will stay in Hasselt for september, and then make a new tour along the channel.

Hendrik van Veldeke is the first writer in the Low Countries that we know by name who wrote in a European language (rather than Latin). Some thirty romantic lyrics by Veldeke have been preserved. He is therefore one of the first generation of minnesangers that put the Roman courtly romantic poetry in a Germanic language. It is good news that the birds sing out loud where one sees flowers. Sinds maandag 12 september 2011 rijdt er ook een HLE 18 met een stam M6 rijtuigen op de IC verbinding Genk - Gent-Sint-Pieters. Op Bovenstaande foto is de 1812 net aangekomen in Hasselt. Dit was de 2de slag van de dag naar Gent, maar wel de eerste die we konden fotograferen ivm het licht. Voor de geïnteresseerden hieronder de dienstregeling van de 1812 de komende week. Le Paradoxe de Robinson is a trailer and palm tree, which can be experienced from the first floor of the Wing ’58 exhibition space. The exotic connotation of a palm tree immediately transfers a warm holiday feeling, even in the middle of winter. The work brings us back to the beginning of the exhibition; the displacing of nature and the idea of nature as paradise. Essential piece of kit for every parent – The Rubber Duck. Keeps Kids amused for hours in the bath, paddling pool, and kitchen sink if you’re not careful. Artist Florentijn Hofman has taken the Rubber Duck to new heights. His creation can be seen at the Hasselt Harbour in Belgium. It measures a whopping 12 x 14 x 16 meters. Florentijn Hofman explains: “The Rubber Duck knows no frontiers, it doesn’t discriminate people and doesn’t have a political connotation. The friendly, floating Rubber Duck has healing properties: it can relieve mondial tensions as well as define them. The rubber duck is soft, friendly and suitable for all ages.” Now we get it!

The 504 Coupe is one of the masterpieces in coupeheaven and this example's specification (V6, period alloys, that color, leather,...) and condition (one little dent) are as good as anyone could desire. Night of the Living Dead Flies.

An entomological horror picture. Be sure to hit that L button. A 33 Image Stack, Software used; Zerene Stacker. With this picture I learned that I have to make more pictures at closer intervals. Say 3 to 4 per mm instead of approx. 2 so I end up with 70 to 120 photographs. Still learning the do's and dont's of Zerene Stacker as I have purchased it only recently. This fly is about 4 mm in size. The dangling legs, the coloured eye and its shabby appearance made me think of a zombie, hence the title. Cheerio, Kim

Het vroegere postkantoor aan de Havermarkt in Hasselt is een gebouw in eclectische stijl met neobarokke kenmerken. Het pand werd in 1899 gebouwd toen de overheid op de plek van het vroegere Augustijnerklooster een nieuw postgebouw wilde plaatsen. De voorgevel van het pand is vooral boven de ingang mooi gedecoreerd. Het postgebouw werd in 1983 beschermd als monument. Vandaag is het een mix van een handelszaak met erboven woongelegenheden. 5404 Hasselt 27-11-2010

Op zaterdag 27 november 2010 werd een museumtrein gecharterd door TTB (TreinTramBus). De 29.013 bracht het gezelschap van Brussel-zuid naar Mechelen, vervolgens reed de trein zonder passagiers naar Leuven. In Leuven koppelde de 29 af en reed samen met 1 L rijtuig naar Schaarbeek. De 5404 mocht dan nog een rit naar Hasselt doen via Aarschot om vervolgens via Sint-truiden en Tienen terug te keren naar Leuven. 5404 bij aankomst in het station van Hasselt.

How could I not be pleased being blessed with gorgeous features like these, amirite? I adore simple pleasures. They are the last refuge of the complex. ~ Oscar Wilde ~ Het Refugehuis was een van de eerste stenen gebouwen in de binnenstad. De steenhouwer-archtect Laurens Ballen bouwde dit prachtige Refugehuis in 1542 voor rekening van de abdis van Herkenrode. Als er gevaar dreigde, verlieten de weerloze nonnen hun abdij en zochten dan een schuilplaats binnen de wat veiliger stadswallen.

Van Genk is het een kleine stap naar Hasselt en daar wordt komend weekeinde dan weer een open dag gehouden. Hier poseert de 8433 voor een dreigende wolkenlucht voor de fotogenieke Infraloods van WDT Hasselt. Na het afscheid van de 92-ers was de reeks 84 de tweede reeks die massaal overging naar Dienst Baan. Elke stelplaats kreeg er een handvol van, die meestal erg trouw in de buurt bleven. (dia)
