HARAJUKU is well-known as fashion Street of Tokyo. A shopping and entertainment district for the young and trendy. HARAJUKU first burst onto the scene in 1964 - the Olympic year. HARAJUKU's fashion is an extraordinary blend of goods reflecting the Japanese notions of cute, cool and American and rebellious and British. In other words a strange mixture of Hello Kitty, Disney, hip-hop and the infamous British punk and fancy dresses.

What I particularly liked about this shot was the fact that, save for the funky costumes, these girls could just be hanging out together anywhere.... unlike some of the folks on the bridge who were posing for all they were worth, these ladies were just enjoying themselves with friends.

This gaijin punk appeared out of nowhere and immediately had a big circle of people around him, gawping at his hair and multiple piercings. The funny thing was, the kids that were usually getting all the attention were also the ones clamouring up to him to get a photo.

UPDATE: See shikisai.maki's comments below for more information on the girls in the photo. Almost an automatic reaction when they see a camera is to hold their fingers in a V shape. Does it mean peace or is it a victory sign from the American occupation? We may never know.
