XMS2 (JLA52D) from Gillingham Street Garage on Red Arrow Route 500 in Hanover Square

XMS2 (JLA52D) from Gillingham Street Garage on Red Arrow Route 500 in Hanover Square
Made by Mega Anorak
In April 1966 London Transport gave its customers an intimation of things to come in its Reshaping Plan with the introduction of its first Red Arrow service, intended to improve service reliability over short, heavily used sections in central London. The initial weapon was the XMS class, rear-engined single deck AEC Merlins (actually LT's name for the Swift) with standee B25D + 42 bodywork by Strachan who had not supplied bodywork to LT in recent years. The concept was that high-frequency short routes would avoid the accumulated delays that could build up on the longer services running into the central area, while passengers would prefer standing while moving over short distances to long waits at a stop. A final novelty was a flat fare of sixpence (2.5p) dropped into a slot machine. The initial service ran between Victoria Station and Hanover Square in the off-peak, but only Victoria - Marble Arch in the peaks. Although not everyone was convinced, LT declared the experiment a success and a couple of years later installed quite a complex of Red Arrow services of which two survive today. The XMS class proved unreliable and was disposed of fairly quickly although the MBA's that replaced them weren't much better.

Elephant #231, "The Illustrated Elephant"

Elephant #231, "The Illustrated Elephant"

9 June 2010: Thanks to those who wished me to get well from this lousy Summer cold. It's been a bad one and is still hanging on. Here's a picture of the fantastic elephant #231, The Illustrated Elephant, by Soju Tanaka. It is located in Hanover Square west of Regent Street. It's one of Tiz and my favourites and is full of helpful characters pointing out all the different parts of the elephant from large to small. Tonight I managed to get to see the controversial elephant Gerald at a scheduled viewing at Elephant Parade HQ (thanks to the wonderful Carly and her colleagues who set it up). Wonder if this is what the Grand Tourists used to feel like before entering the Gabinetto Segreto at Naples Archaeological Museum! Just one elephant to go now... #165 Untitled which had been cruelly moved from Sotheby's just before I got there! Taken with Tiz's camera IMG_8558_TN, 30%

2009-08-07e St George's Church
Made by [Ananabanana]
Walking through London I got a little lost, but the internetz tell me this is St George's church in Hanover Square, Mayfair. In 1711 Queen Anne decreed that 50 new churches were to be built to serve London's expanding population (the fifty churches act / Queen Anne churches). St George's was designed by John James and built between 1721-1724. The windows are composed of 16th century Flemish glass, imported from Antwerp. Taken with Nikon D40 and Nikkor AFS DX 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6G II lens. More of my photos can be found

St George's was built 1721-1724 to the designs of John James, as one of the Fifty Churches projected by Queen Anne's Act of 1711. The reredos is from the workshop of Grinling Gibbons and frames a 'Last Supper' painted by William Kent in 1724. The windows contain Flemish glass of the early 16th century from Antwerp. George Frederick Handel was a regular worshipper at St George's which is now home to the annual Handel Festival. St. George's has a full time professional choir and a strong choral tradition

In 1980 I got a tax rebate and spent it on an Olympus OM1. This is from one of the first rolls of film I shot with it so I love it for the nostalgia of excitement from owning my first really high quality camera. Looking at it now I also love it for the sense of time and place it gives. This is how I remember London in 1980 - the light, the slight griminess, the 1950s still with us, damp and a bit gloomy most of the time.

William Pitt statue, Hanover Square

William Pitt statue, Hanover Square
Made by Fin Fahey
This statue of William Pitt the Younger, erected in 1831, has a strange resonance with the missing statue of the Duke of Cumberland nearby at Cavendish Square. In this case, removal of the statue was a failure - a group of reformers tried to bring it down with ropes on the very day it was erected.

This plaque outside St Georges School commemorates those former pupils who gave their lives whilst serving in The Great War. There are also traces of shrapnel damage to the lower left hand side of the plaque, which is located at the rear of the school facing Mount Street Gardens

The opposite of the Victorian extravagance, dull utilitarian concrete architecture. But it still has something... Impossible Project PX600 First Flush film in a Polaroid SLR680
