Hanasaari A - An Unimaginative Decision III

The Hanasaari A coal-fired power plant being demolished. The plant had stood unused since 1999, and creative ideas about its possible re-use had sprawned from urban cultural undergrowth ever since. Regardless the fact that there is a serious shortage of low-rent room for low-productive cultural activities like band rehearsal rooms, recording and art studios etc. in Helsinki, the majority of city council, especially Coalition Party members dismissed the action on these alternative development ideas. Instead of co-operation, the municipalities in Helsinki region are vigorously competing against each other in attracting the so-called good taxpayers. So luxury flats will be built onto the site of the power station, regardless the whopping cost of 125 million euros just for cleaning the site only. How boring! Why everything in Helsinki always has to be planned from above, why not just let things to happen more often? Even though this power plant was nothing especial or beautiful, Kimmo Helistö (greens) crystallised my personal feelings about the conflict: Helsinki will lose a great opportunity, if Hanasaari A-power plant is demolished --- A creative city would maintain this peculiar building, as anything of its kind will certainly never be built again....
