- Cultural Heritage Museum. A small but interesting museum displaying 7000 years of Hallstatt history.
- Beinhaus. "Bone House" in English. Due to the extremely limited space in the cemetery, burials are only temporary. After 10-15 years the grave is opened and the bones are removed and bleached in the sun. Then they are stacked in the Beinhaus. It's not as gruesome as it sounds. Skulls are often decorated with painted flowers and the family name. This practice was stopped in the 70's with the approval of cremation by the catholic church - you will see that those who remain buried all have recent dates of death.
- See the town. Simply enjoy the peace and quiet of the town. Have lunch in a cafe next to the lake and feed the swans. Window shop.

Beinhaus (Bone House) - Hallstatt Austria

The Beinhaus (bone house) in Hallstatt dates back to twelve century AC. There are over 1200 skulls in the charnel, of them 610 have been painted in flowery designs, they are neatly stacked in rows along with next of kin and have the date of decease written on them. Since the cemetery is so small without the possibility to expand and due to the fact that cremations were in former days forbidden there was just not enough space. The graves were opened 10 - 15 years later and the skulls were removed along sometimes with other bones. The skull was cleaned and exposed to the sun and moon light for weeks until they were bleached ivory white. As one would decorate a grave with flowers the skulls were painted symbolically with a crown of flowers. This tradition began in 1720 AD. The last skull to go into the Beinhaus (Bone house) was in 1995. It is directly beside the cross. The woman died 1983; it was her last request to be stored in the Beinhaus (Bone house)

The Hallstatt-Dachstein Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape was inscribed in the UNESCO list of world heritages in 1997. Human activity in the magnificent natural landscape of the Salzkammergut began in prehistoric times, with the salt deposits being exploited as early as the 2nd millennium B.C. This resource formed the basis of the area's prosperity up to the middle of the 20th century, a prosperity that is reflected in the fine architecture of the town of Hallstatt. UNESCO considered that the Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut alpine region is an outstanding example of a natural landscape of great beauty and scientific interest which also contains evidence of a fundamental human economic activity, the whole integrated in a harmonious and mutually beneficial manner. Hallstatt Cultural Landscape

Hallstatt, Austria Hallstatt is one of those unnoticed villages located deep in the mountains of upper Austria. It was a bit of a trick to get this place, having to take a train from Salzburg, then a boat to get to the actual village. But it was well worth it in the end. Upon arrival, I hiked up the mountain to take a tour of one of the worlds first recognized salt mine. The top of this mountain also provided me with a great view of the landscape surrounding Hallstatt. This is one of those places I recommend everybody to go visit if they are ever in the area. Just remember to bring some comfortable shoes. Hallstatt is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. How glorious a greeting the sun gives the mountains! - John Muir

Hallstatt, Upper Austria is a village in the Salzkammergut, a region in Austria. It is located near the Hallstätter See (a lake). At the 2001 census it had 946 inhabitants. The name Hall is most probably from the old Celtic name for salt, the salt mines near the village being an important factor. Salt was a valuable resource, so the region was historically very wealthy. It is possible to tour the world's first known salt mine, located above downtown Hallstatt. The village also gave its name to the early Iron Age Hallstatt culture and is a World Heritage Site for Cultural Heritage. Hallstatt is a popular tourist attraction owing to its small-town appeal and can be toured on foot in ten minutes.

Hallstatt is a small village (population 835) at Lake Hallstatt in the austrian alps (close to Salzburg). The first road to Hallstatt was built at the end of the 19th century, so it wonders a little, that it´s history started 5000 b.c !!! Hallstatt is looking back on a several thousand years lasting salt-mining tradition. Salt once was called the White Gold . Due to the trade with salt Hallstatt early came to economic prosperity and was an important cultural center. Because of this fact this little village gave it´s name to a long period of time of the Iron Age . This period lasted from 1200-450 b.c. In Middle Europe this time was called the Hallstatt Period.

Hallstatt

Hallstatt, Austria The first shot from our trip to Austria and Czech Republic. We started in Vienna and then spent a couple days in Hallstatt, pictured here. Hallstatt is a very charming little town nestled at the base of some impressive Alp Peaks. There is a 3000 year old salt mine here which why the town originally sprung up. The salt mine is still here where one can take the most in-depth tour imaginable...I could quite possibly open my own salt mine using the info gained from my two hours in the dank tunnels. I spent two mornings hoping for a glimmer of sunshine on the church and town and finally had a bit of luck our last couple hours here.

Hallstatt, Upper Austria

That day was very cloudy and gloomy. Light was very poor and clouds were floating just above your head. Like those reflections and floating clouds on top of mountains is like icing on cake. Trivia Hallstatt, Upper Austria is a village in the Salzkammergut, a region in Austria. Because of the extraordinary importance of the beautiful cultural landscape, Hallstatt was declared a World Heritage Site in 1997 by UNESCO. RedBubble I Imagekind

Guess what is this?

I am not used to wake up early in the morning to catch the first light of the horizon. Nevertheless, this location is so near to my B&B - 2 mins walk (now you have the idea how small is Hallstatt). Thus I really have no reason not to try this shot. It was a great challenge and there is really no way to avoid the burn-out in the horizon line. I had the reverse GND with me but I simply cannot apply it as it will covered all the nice area in the layering mountain.

Situated in the south-western shore of the Hallstätter See, Hallstatt lies in the geographical region of Salzkammergut, on the national road linking Salzburg and Graz. Salt was a valuable resource, so the region was historically very wealthy. It is possible to tour the world's first known salt mine, located above downtown Hallstatt. The village also gave its name to the early Iron Age Hallstatt culture and is a World Heritage Site for Cultural Heritage.

Charnel House (Bone House), Hallstatt, Austria
Made by KlickerChick
Hallstatt’s Catholic Cemetery and adjacent Beinhaus (Charnel-House) are fascinating. The Hallstatt graveyard is so small, that after 12 years they would dig up the bones, decorate them, and put them in the chapel. Some of the bones date back to the 1600s; the most recent are from the 1960s (when the Catholic church began to allow cremation and the space issues were not so problematic).

Public library and sauna in Hallstatt, 2
Made by library_mistress
In the upper Austrian village Hallstatt, public library and public sauna are obviously in the same building - interestingly, only the opening hours of the sauna are displayed in the showcase in front of the entrance. I suppose taking books into the sauna is not allowed although they could be used for covering the naughty parts... photo taken by Gregory Raubik on December 18, 2005

13 de Agosto de 2006. Hallstatt, Tirol, Austria. Posiblemente, junto con Pertisau, uno de los pueblos más hermosos que he visitado. Recuperando fotos de mi vieja compacta Canon IXUS-400 que tanto me ha acompañado en mis viajes. Probably along with Pertisau this is one of the most beautiful towns I have ever visited.

At a grocery store in Hallstatt, Austria. My juvenile sense of humor was so taken with this that I think I may have pushed down an old woman and trampled several toddlers as I rushed through this store to find my boyfriend so I could show it to him. After all that, he was not nearly as amused as I was. :-)

Night settles in over Hallstatt
Made by MichaelDuquetteFowler
No editing (other than a minor crop) Thankfully I had a tripod. I sat on the porch of our hotel room and watched as night settled into the deep valley. The birds sang, the swans quietly swam by and a late evening boat made the crossing. It was very peaceful and serene.

Skulls

Inside the Parish Church's charnel house in Hallstatt, Austria. Their cemetery is quite small. It used to be that remains were dug up after 10 years and placed here. Your family would paint your name and add decorative elements on to the skull.
