Hagia Sophia, (the Church of) Holy Wisdom, now known as the Ayasofya Museum, is a former Eastern Orthodox church converted to a mosque in 1453 by the Turks, and converted into a museum in 1935. It is located in Istanbul, Turkey. It is traditionally considered one of the great buildings in history. Its conquest by the Ottomans at the fall of Constantinople is considered one of the great tragedies of Christianity by the Greek Orthodox faithful and a prized conquest by the Turks, who have maintained and kept it accessible for nearly 600 years.

*Las ciudades Invisibles // Italo Calvino* And they took me to visit a hunging street recenlty opened over a bamboo forest, a shadow theatre being built where the former dog’s home was (...) About the mood of the inhabitants of Andria, two virtues must be emphasized: their self-confidence and their prudence. Knowing that every innovation at the city would have influence in the sky drawing, before taking each decission they calculate risks and pros for themselves, for the city and for all the worlds *Invisible cities // Italo Calvino*

Above the nave of the Aya Sofya, in the arch on the lower right is a mosaic of Mary with the Christ child on her knees (9th Cent). The panel in the centre contains the name of Mohammed, the Prophet The domed basilica of the Aya Sofya - completed in 563AD - is still the 4th largest in the world. The dome itself is 56m high and 32m wide, supported by 4 columns and 2 semi-domes. The windows in the dome give the impression that it is hanging in space above the vast space of the basilica. There are few buildings in the world that give the same feeling of space. The Aya Sofya was built in only 5 years by a crew of 10000 workers, and is believed to be one of the first instances of the use of performance related pay! Justinian split the workforce in two and promised bonuses to whichever group worked faster. No scaffolding was used in the construction, the same methods were used as with the pyramids, of piling earth mounds to gain access to higher levels.

The Romans covered the interior of the Hagia Sophia with glorious mosaics. The Ottoman Turks converted the catherdal into a mosque, plastered the mosaics, and painted glorious caligraphy and geometric patterns. This is the domed ceiling of the Hagia Sophia with the Turkish caligraphy intact. The vertical lines you see are wires holding the chandeliers. * See more Istanbul photos here.
