Haarlem's cultural life also prospered, with famous painters like Frans Hals and Jacob van Ruisdael, the architect Lieven de Key and Jan Steen who made many paintings in Haarlem. On the Grote Markt, the central market square, there's a statue of Laurens Janszoon Coster who is allegedly the inventor of the printing press (however, most scholars agree that the scarce evidence seems to point to Johann Gutenberg as the first European inventor). In 1628 a chemist in Haarlem goes broke, and decides to join the VOC to sail to the East. His name, Jeronimus Cornelisz, will always be connected with the Batavia ship.

Tourists can stand in the "hiding place" where Jews were hidden from the Nazis, and see the 'all-clear' sign used to indicate when it was safe for refugees and resistance workers to come and go. Reminiscent of the Anne Frank house in , although where in the Anne Frank House they have had to remove all furniture due to the volume of visitors, the Ten Boom museum is still furnished as a house, making it much easier for visitors to see what it was like for those that lived there during the war. Truly one of Holland's lesser-known gems.

Ten Boom Horlogerie

A day trip to Haarlem to visit the Hiding Place, the watchmakers shop and the home of the ten Boom family. The shop was founded by Willem ten Boom in 1837, and passed on to his son Casper, father of Corrie ten Boom. The family were Christians and their home was always an 'open house' to anyone in need of help. During the second world war the Beje became a 'Hiding Place' for fugitives from the Nazi's - until the family themselves were betrayed and sent to prison or concentration camps. But the fugitives themselves were not discovered and remained in their tiny hiding place until resistance members within the police force were able to release them some days later. Casper (84) died within 10 days of his arrest. Corrie and her sister Betsie were sent to Ravensbruck. Betsie died there, but Corrie was eventually released and spent the rest of her life travelling to tell all the world about the love of God. A film 'The Hiding Place' was made about their story. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Adriaan,_Haarlem De Adriaan werd geopend op 19 mei 1779. De windmolen staat aan de rivier het Spaarne, toentertijd aan de rand van de stad. De molen werd gebouwd op de bestaande funderingen van de vroegere Goevrouwetoren (Goede Vrouwentoren). De Goevrouwentoren maakte deel uit van het oude vestingswerk rond Haarlem. Doordat de molen bovenop de fundering van de toren gebouwd werd, stond de molen hoog en ving daarmee veel wind. Bron Wikipedea

He was an important citizen of Haarlem and held the position of sexton (Koster) of the Sint-Bavo church. There were markets three days we were in Haarlem. All featured flowers, one had lots of sewing supplies -- buttons, fabrics; another clothing, and another food, especially bread and cheese, both looking as good as one could possibly hope to have.

A very attractive car, this friendly looking Felicia convertible. Technically, they were the same as the Octavias. This one still has the 'small block' of 1100 cc, later they came with a 1200 cc engine, which even featured double carburettors.
