Gyeongju

Gyeongju is a city (see Subdivisions of South Korea) and prominent tourist destination in eastern South Korea. It lies in the far southeastern corner of North Gyeongsang Province, on the coast of the Sea of Japan (East Sea). Nearby cities include the industrial centers Ulsan and Pohang. Numerous low mountains, outliers of the Taebaek range, are scattered throughout the city.
Gyeongju is home to South Korea's first nominated .
- Gyeongju National Park. Either take a bus or taxi to get to the park. Once there, hiking trails lead up into the mountains. At first the signs are in both Korean and English but soon they become Korean only. Make sure your Hangul is up for the hike or you will get lost!
- Bulguksa Temple. A wonderful temple well outside the main city. It can be reached by bus every half-hour. Try to go in the early morning for less tourists. It's a working temple so treat the site with the respect it deserves. Possibly the most impressive temple in Korea.
- The Covered Market close to the Gyeongju train station is a classic example of the Korean market with lots of fresh seafood, food stands and some textiles.
- Seokguram Grotto
The world famous "Korean tapdancing museum". You can try on various tap shoes, some dating back as far as 16th century Shilla models. Dont forget to pick up a souvenier "Kwanshamman" litterlly translated mean "little peadofile".

These are ancient king's tombs topped by boulders and soil (virtually looter-proofed because the pile of boulders will collapse), and you can walk around them, accompanied by traditional Korean flute music. A serene, sacred place.
