Marktplatz von Brügge, Ostseite - Bruges Forum, East Side

In the Middle Ages the east side of the Bruges Forum was occupied by warehouses, storing the goods which came to Bruges by ship. At the end of the 18th century these warehouses were replaced by classicistic buildings, partly for the Government of West Flanders. In 1878 a great part of these buildings was destroyed by fire. This led to a redesigning of the east side of the forum: a) The beautiful grey building to the left side with its nice tower, gallery and loggia was erected at the beginning of the 20th century as a residence for the Governor. However, it has never functioned as that, but used for various public administrations. b) The great middle part (see the photo below), built from white stone in 1887-1890, is the Provinciaal Hof (Provincial Court), the Palace for the Provincial Council of West Flanders. c) The building in red bricket to the right was finished in 1891 and serves as Post Office. * * * No group invites and no flickriver badges please! * * *

Der Belfried von Brügge - The Belfry of Bruges

Der Belfried von Brügge - The Belfry of Bruges

The Belfry of Bruges, Flanders, in Winter Light -- The belfry and the cloth halls constitute a complex of 84 x 45 metres, dating from 1240. The belfry is 83 m high and served as watchtower against fire and other risks. It also protected the treasury and the archives of the town. Belfries were typical for medieval cities of Flanders and were symbols of their freedom and wealth. The cloth halls, built together with the belfry, were large commercial halls serving as ware houses and exhibition halls for the wealthy clothworkers' guild. The great market square of Bruges has a total area of about one hectare. In the south it is marked off by the belfry/cloth-hall. - Here are some old houses with beautiful corbie gabels at the north side of the square. In former times some of them were guildhalls, today most of them serve as hotels and restaurants with nice street cafes (in other seasons). During our visit on December 26, 2008, the forum was occupied for the most part by an ice-skating rink and the stalls of the Christmas fear. * * * No group invites and no flickriver badges please! * * *

In Bruges...

In Bruges...

Greetings from the lovely town of Bruges. In case you don’t know where it is, it’s in Belgium :-) It was a very adventurous trip, specially considering the weather. It did rain quite a lot when we arrived in Bruges yesterday. We immediately went to the hotel to warm up a bit before we went out again to see the sights. Little Pip who’s still not used to travel decided to stay in the hotel to warm up some more. So my mommie, my uncle and I went out again and walked out onto the beautiful market square with the very huge belltower, which is quite impressive. Then we found something even more impressive, a place that made waffles and I must say, they were absolutely delicious, yum yum. We thought we should bring some back to the hotel, but we feared that they would get cold and ate them all :-) After it turned dark, everywhere in Bruges the lights went on and it looked very beautiful. We went for a nice walk and then returned back to the hotel. When we opened the door we were in for a surprise! It seemed that Little Pip had discovered the minibar!

We walked up 366 steps of stairs to the top of the 83 meter high building and got many of shots such as this... great experience indeed! i'll be creating couple fake tilt-shift shots... soon =) *** The belfry of Bruges, or Belfort, is a medieval bell tower in the historical center of Bruges, Belgium. One of the city's most prominent symbols, the belfry formerly housed a treasury and the municipal archives, and served as an observation post for spotting fires and other danger. A narrow, steep staircase of 366 steps, accessible by the public for an entry fee, leads to the top of the 83-meter-high building, which leans about a meter to the east. To the sides and back of the tower stands the former market hall, a rectangular building only 44 m broad but 84 m deep, with an inner courtyard. The belfry, accordingly, is also known as the Halletoren (tower of the halls).

harsh winter morning light illuminating the Grote Markt in Brugge (or Bruges). Although the city is medieval, these buildings on the south side of the main square are considered by many to be medieval-looking. They have been so heavilly renovated, that they are almost reconstructions in the original style... Despite that, they stiil look great; and the late December light makes for interesting contrast... Photo: 1/400 sec at f / 5.6, iso 100, 7.4 mm. Bruges has most of its medieval architecture intact. The historic centre of Bruges has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Along with a few other canal-based northern cities, such as Amsterdam, it is sometimes referred to as The Venice of the North. Bruges' most famous landmark is its 13th-century belfry, housing a municipal carillon comprising 48 bells. The city still employs a full-time carillonneur, who gives free concerts on a regular basis.

We have had a mini brake to Bruge in Belgium this week unfortunately via ferry during the worst storms of the winter ( great idea but you can't choose the weather). We got to spend one day in the center of Bruge which has some fantastic architecture. I loved this row of buildings and have a few different shots of them including this one from the top of the Belfort
