Los Angeles, 1996 The 1935 Griffith Park Observatory and Planetarium high above Los Angeles is my favorite retreat from the flatlands below. It's great for watching sunsets, too. So often derided by the rest of the country, the city is actually home to so many wonderful examples of Beaux Arts and Art Deco architecture (to name two of my personal favorite styles). Art Deco just makes me smile and feel better.

The modern architecture of the renovated Griffith Observatory, looking down the corridor to the Robert J. and Suzanne Gottlieb solar calendar. The sun shines through the lens at midday and focuses on the day of the year on a calendar. The attention to detail is amazing. I was told that the stair rails have been built to point directly at Polaris, the North Star. (070109_025.JPG)

It goes from nothing special to this to nothing special in 10 mins as the sun sets over the Pacific, and this only when it's very clear shot at 670mm equivalent, handheld with Canon 20D, 300mm F4L IS and 1.4x TC the original is 20000 wide, only a 6000 wide version is uploaded here
