Green River Lookdown III
Made by claustral
It took a long time to finally settle on this composition. Getting the lines right was hard, and it wasn't until I walked over the little ridge you can see at the top right that things really started to come together, but this isn't too shabby either. 5 shot HDR with multiple layers and curves adjustment. In deference to the How did you do that group, here's something more on the processing. First RAW conversion in DxO Optics Pro. Identical processing for all 5 exposures. Used Landscape colour mode and otherwise just optical corrections, no tonal changes. Exported to five 16bit TIFFs with AdobeRGB ICC profiling. Made an HDR intermediate in Photomatix v4.01 and then tonemapped with the tone compressor. Dropped the colour temp a bit here because the red was getting out of control. Saved as 16bit TIFF. Opened in CS4. Probably pressed Ctrl-M to open the curves adjustment and then chose Options and selected the best of the various presets in order to get the colour and tones looking in reasonable shape. Used the magic wand to select the sky. Copied the selection to a new layer and then filled that with a gradient going from transparent at the horizon to black at the top of the image. Selected Soft Light as that layer's transmission type. 100% Opacity and 100% Fill. This step is the equivalent of using a grad filter on the lens, but without the ugly darkening of solid objects poking into the sky. The next part might be in the wrong order for best results, but next I sharpened with Nik Sharpener Pro. Probably left it mostly at defaults for screen viewing, but would have added extra control points on the tree and front rocks for increased Structure. I thought the result of this was still a bit flat (too obviously tone-mapped) so I masked off the cliff top area on the sharpened layer and copied this to a new layer, above the sharpened layer. I set the transmission to Overlay and Opacity to 30%. This darkened the shadows and punched up the contrast. Cleaned up a few areas of inaccurate masking with local highlight burn. Some other local dodging and burning to keep the contrast high and the textures strong. Finally rescaled to Flickr resolution, flattened, converted to sRGB and 8 bits. Saved as JPEG and here we are!

Storm over the Canyon II
Made by bluesplayer43
This was the scene at the Green River Overlook in Canyonlands, Island in the Sky unit, not long after the photograph I posted from the same location a few days ago. The lightening was intense and I thought it was a good time to get out and try my lightning trigger but low and behold the dam battery was flat (I must remember to take the battery out next time as it seems to drain if left in). In the end I just put on my new (and now rapidly becoming one of my favourite lenses) 70-300 mm L lens, set the focus just a little off infinity, the aperture at F11 and left the shutter open on brief for various lengthy exposures. The instructions I'd seen of photographing lightning had suggested using the lens wide open, but previous attempts at those settings had rendered the lightning bolts a little soft, so in this case I went for F11. With each progressive shot it was getting windier and I thought fir sure the tripod would move. With this one I held it down. The shot was quite noisy of course, but that didn't matter as the lightning bolts were sharp, and copious use of the Luminance and Colour noise reduction (set at 68 and 100 respectively) in Lightroom has rescued a decent picture out of this shot. My very last shot I left the shutter open for 298 seconds and is awesome but that I'm saving for another time! Motely Crew

The group, still naive to the dangers that lurk below... attacks by 17 foot long diamond back rattle snakes, herds of rabid big horned sheep charging through camp in the night, floods, hail, torrential downpours and gale force winds. We will miss our fellow adventurers that we had to leave behind, or rather, leave pinned beneath the truck that slid into the canyon. In time they will rise again as part of the cryptobiotic soil that will eventually claim them. Start to the best trip ever! From Green River Overlook to White Rim Road
Made by dcumminsusa
Soon... In about a month I hope to be returning to the Moab area and paying Canyonlands National Park a second visit. Canyonlands is 530 square miles, and while it isn't as deep as The Grand Canyon; it has a larger variety of geological formations. Also since it is so close to the more popular Grand Canyon, you can find it easier to get away from the crowds here because in order to see the majority of the park you need to either hike/camp overnight or use a 4WD vehicle. In this shot you can see White Rim Road (see l), one of parks more popular roads. I'm not sure if I will be camping in the park just yet or not. I have some time to decide.

This was taken at Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park in Utah. Its a beautiful park, quite similar to the Grand Canyon but with far fewer tourists. This picture is actually a good few years old now, but it remains one of my favourites despite a few technical problems with it. The reason its one of my favourites is that its the first half decent picture I managed to take, although its a very popular location with photographers so there are hundreds of brilliant mages of this arch on the net. Taken on a Pentax Mz7, can't remember the lens. Scanned from a negative. comments welcome

Storm over the Canyon

So much for my sunset shot at the Green River Overlook in Canyonlands, which never really materialised. However, I hung on in hope that there would be a break in the clouds but instead was treated to a distant storm creating this moody scene complete with distant lightning. Another Planet?
Made by dcumminsusa
Shot from Green River Overlook (yeah, I've been to Canyonlands twice now and ) from my recent trip to both Arches and National Park with Barak Naggan. The winds were already strong by this time in the morning. I'm surprised this image has any sharpness at all. I can't remember if I used a tripod for this shot or if I decided to hand hold it. I used both a Polarizer and a Graduated Neutral Density Filter to make the sky a bit more interesting since the winds were quickly obliterating any clouds.

Green River Overlook, Canyonlands National Park, Utah In this country, we are getting ready for likely closure of the government tonight, it will close the National Parks to visitors. This was a threat prior to my vacation here last month, but they did a few weeks' extension, ending tonight. I hope for the people who plan to visit places like this soon--and especially for federal workers who will be furloughed--that the politics get resolved to not affect so many people.

Green River Overlook

Amid all the training with foreground interest in the workshop, this came along. Sometimes something is so huge you just have to look at it. No distractions, nothing fancy. Just the view. Rendered in HDR. 5 exposures with some post to bring back the wow factor that this view actually causes in reality. That's the Green River down there, and a couple of kilometres downstream it joins the Coloarado, and not long after you're in the Grand Canyon.

The Nik add-on for Lightroom has been just spectacular. The original image itself was already amazing. There is just so much depth and 3D-ness in the colors and how light reflects. But with a very cloudless sky it just screamed B&W so I used Nik Silver Efex Pro to convert it to B&W and then further fix it up in Lightroom to add the yellow tinge to give it a bit more life.

This is a 3-exposure HDR of the White Rim of the Green River in Canyonlands National Park. This was taken just after sunset since earlier in the day, the direct sunlight was lighting up the haze that had settled in the canyon and obscured most of the detail. The indirect light after sunset avoided the haze and the red-orange from the sky was reflected off the White Rim.

The famous John Wesley Powell, a geology professor and one-armed Civil War veteran, described this canyon country as wilderness of rock before adventuring himself into the Colorado River in Grand Canyon. This region is mostly now Canyonlands National Park. Canon EOS 50D with Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM at f=85mm, Av=4.5, Tv=1/250 and ISO=100

I wasn't going to take this shot because it doesn't have any foreground to give it perspective, but this is the only view we had of the Green River. In the distance is the maze district on the west side of the Green River. It takes about 8 hours to drive there. More if you try to go straight. Assuming that they can find you again.

So once the spectacle of this place has become a little familiar it is time to hunt for foreground interest. This was the second shot I took after the straight up version. I like the texture on the rocks and of course the two strategically placed shrubs. One shot with a little cropping and sharpening.

Tree

In Canyonlands NP, Utah. After shooting sunrise at Mesa Arch which was so crowded that photographers had to coordinate to place their tripods, the Green River Overlook, where this image has been taken, with few people during early morning was a welcome change.

Upheaval Dome

This interesting feature, Upheaval Dome, is found in the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park. Although geologists don't know with certainty how it formed, one possibility is that this is an ancient impact crater from an asteroid strike.

I Spend a Lot of Time On Other Worlds
Made by dcumminsusa
I think this is the last shot I have in my archive from Green River Overlook that I will post (until I go back to Canyonlands). Despite the fact I was shooting in mid-morning sunlight, I was drawn to how the light was hitting this dead Juniper tree.

Canyonlands in January
Made by 'Joseph'
5 degree's outside in the middle of January. This was just before sunset and I should of waited just a little bit longer for better light with using such a high contrast film. But it still reminds me of what it looked like through my eyes.
