Lawrence Berkeley National Lab physicist Saul Perlmutter writes out the equation in which Einstein included his cosmological constant. What did Einstein have in mind with this cosmological constant? At the end the 1910’s, when Einstein tried to figure out how to take his theory of general relativity and apply it to the universe, he could only get a universe that would contract or expand, not a static one, Perlmutter explains. But people at that time believed that the universe was static. So Einstein added the cosmological constant into the equation. When astronomer Edwin Hubble discovered that the universe was actually expanding, Einstein threw out the cosmological constant. Everyone quotes Einstein as saying that the cosmological constant was his biggest blunder.
