The Great Hall of the People (Simplified Chinese: ��; Traditional Chinese: ��; pinyin: R�nm�n D�h�it�ng) is located at the western edge of Tiananmen Square, Beijing, People's Republic of China, and is used for legislative and ceremonial activities by the People's Republic of China and the Communist Party of China. However, most day to day government activities are conducted within a complex at Zhongnanhai.

39°54'12.43N,116°23'16.59E This is one of the largest congressional buildings in the world. Built in 1959, the hall consists of three parts: a 10,000-seat auditorium in the center, a banquet hall in the north wing facing Chang’an Street, with a seating capacity of 5,000, and offices for the Standing Committee of the National Peoples’ Congress of China in the south. In addition, thirty-four reception chambers are named after various provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly unde the Central Government, plus Hong Kong and Macao. Each is different from the other in decoration and furnishings to stress their local features.

It was SO disgustingly smoggy on the day we visited Tiananmen Square that everything was hazy and slightly yellow. I went with B&W for this shot because, in my opinion, it was almost unuseable in colour because of the smog. On the day we visited, Chinese Parliament was in session. I'm not sure if the security was increased as a result, but there was plenty of it around. I was blown away by the scale of the square itself, as well as this building.

The People's Congress Hall flanks the western side of Tian'anmen Square. Constructed in 1959, it's over 40 metres high, which a floor space of 171800 square metres, when it is in session. The grest hall has numerous conference rooms, banquet halls, and reception areas, many of vast size: the major confernce hall accommodates 10000 people and the huge banquet hall can seat 5000.

Built in 1959 in only 10 months, it covers an area of 171,800 square metres. It is 320 metres in length and 206 metres in width, with its highest part at 40.5 metres. The Great Hall can hold 10,000 people, and its banquet hall can hold 5,000 people.

Tiananmen Square from the parliament building (which was freaking huge). Gross gross and gross. I think it was a cloudy day, as it rained later, but nobody could assure me that wasn't all smog. You can barely even see 300 yards in front of you!
