The Empty Cafe - 02

The Empty Cafe - 02
Made by Andreas Resch
The Empty Cafe - 02 I live in a rather big city (at least compared to other cities in Austria) but haven't been shooting a lot of photos here in the past. As many of you know, I'm a nature photographer and not used to urban photography too much yet. Anyway, that's a thing I'd like to do more often as I want to challenge myself with new opportunities. Here is a place in the center of Graz where the chairs of a cafe are not set up yet. I loved the repeating pattern and the deserted mood of the scene. Ayleen - 05 One thing I haven't tried very often so far it portrait shooting. Meanwhile I've bought some used flashes and some strobes. Yesterday I had a chance to try the things out as a friend of mine asked me to take some portrait pictures of his little daughter. Here are some of the results. The Wait.

The Wait.
Made by Palentino
And while she waited the time advanced inexorably. The 16th century ‘Uhrturm’, or clock tower, is only one of two features which still exist from the destruction of the city’s defences following the Treaty of Vienna. Napoleon’s armies were paid 2,987 florins and 11 farthings to prevent the tower from being destroyed during the 1809 French invasion. Strangely the large hand is the hour hand; the minute hand being added much later. Dating from around 1560, the 28m high clock tower is the emblem of the city of Graz. Romanov Oleg - 4.30 minutes to relaxations

Hackher-Löwe

Hackher-Löwe

The monument of Major Franz Xaver Hackher zu Hart at the Schlossberg of Graz, a soldier from the Imperial Army of Francis II (the last Holy Roman emperor), who defended (well tried to defend, eventually Graz was conquered) Graz against Napoleon Bonaparte. His clever strategy is still honored by Graz and became a Lieutenant Colonel (and afterwards Colonel). Napoleon was not so amused about his archievement and demanded that the castle of Graz had to be deconstructed, and since then there is no castle of Graz anymore. In 1909 Otto Jarl made a monument for Major Hackher, the Hackher-Lion - there was no picture, painting or any document which would have given a single hint of Majors Hackhers physical appearance. This lion was given as a Adolf Hitler metal donation during the war at 1941 away and was melt down 1943. Eventually in 1966 a interpretation of the original Hackher-Lion was reinstalled at the Schlossberg. camera: Rollei Rolleicord III - Model K3B lens: Schneider Xenar 75mm f/3.5 film: Ilford HP5 Plus 400ASA scan: CanoScan 8400 & SilverFast SE

Passant, willst Du wissen, wo Du stehst? Willst Du wissen, Unschuldiger, wer Du bist? Warum hast Du geschwiegen? Wer hat Dich zum Komplizen gemacht?

...shoudn't be harmed here.

אחד, два, drei!

And the Lord spake, saying, First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it. Amen. Graz, Uhrturm

Graz, Uhrturm

To be on castle hill in styrias capital Graz just at blooming time of the rose is of course a cast of fortune. Only blue sky I couldn't got. But the clock tower, the most famous landmark of Graz, didn't care about the weather.

I was on a tour with my Rokkor 135mm f/3.5 lens when I found that nice little spot in a street where the sun lit the floor. Many people were passing by and I played around with depth of field. Best viewed large.

Graz was the European Kulturhauptstadt (capital of culture) in 2003. To that occasion a shadow (a black tower of the same form) was added to the famous clocktower. Fly to this location (requires Google Earth)
