Graz (ethyomologically from Slovenian: Gradec IPA: /gra.dets/, "little castle"; Czech: Strsk Hradec), with a population of 287,723 as of 2006 (of which 250,099 have principal residence status), is the second-largest city in Austria after Vienna and the capital of the federal state of Styria (Steiermark in German). It has a long tradition as a student city, with six universities with over 40,000 students. Graz's "Old Town" is one of the best-preserved city centers in Central Europe, and in 1999 was added to the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage Sites. Graz was sole Cultural Capital of Europe for 2003.

  • The historic old town. It has been designated a site.
  • The Glockenspiel, which comes to life with song and rotating dance figures every day at precisely 11:00, 15:00 and 18:00.
  • The Mausoleum, with impressive interior decor.
  • The Schlossberg , the castle perched upon a hill in the middle of the city around which Graz sprang up. The funicular and elevator will take the effort out of the walk to the top, although to use them would be to miss the wooded paths and some spectacular views.
  • Clock Tower on the top of the , the symbol of Graz.
  • Eggenberg Castle . Early Baroque architecture, lavish state rooms. There is a small (€ 1.00) fee for entering the park surrounding the castle, which they likely will not charge you if you say you intend to take the castle tour. The castle tour is highly recommended though, as it contains dramatic wall and ceiling paintings, elaborate ceramic stoves, and inlaid wood floors. ( Tram 1 direction Eggenberg/UKH) Tel: 583264-0 (free entry to the museum with euro<26 card)
  • Kunsthaus, is Graz's newest exhibition place. It's worth a visit, even if you only look at its design from the outside. It's right across the river from Hauptplatz at the Suedtirolerplatz (Tram 1,3,6,7,14 direction Hauptbahnhof). (You will definitely notice the blue bubble) (free entry with euro<26 card)
  • Murinsel. Originally a temporary project during 2003, people liked it enough so it stayed. An artificial island in the river, with a stage for performances and a coffeehouse.
  • Joanneum Museum of Styria . Tel: 8017-9716. (free entry with euro<26 card)
  • Armoury , in the Tel: 8017 9810. Open March 19th - October 31th, 2005: M-Su 10AM-6PM, Th 10AM-8PM; Nov 1st, 2005 - Mar 18th, 2006 Th-Su 10AM-3PM; free entry with euro<26 card. Contains an amazing collection of arms and armor, from large two-handed swords and maces to the more modern pistols. Originally the local armory ready to equip the people in the event of an attack, the weapons you'll see here were made for use, not show. English tours are available; enquire early in the day to see what time one will be offered. If you are incredibly enthusiastic about weapons and ask nicely, your guide might treat you to further description of the use and care of the weapons after your tour is completed. Pictures are not allowed, but postcards with pictures of the main pieces can be bought in the gift shop. Be warned, this building gets extremely warm in the summer (especially on the upper floors). Weapons enthusiasts may wish to go early in the day, or you may find your interest waning rapidly as the puddles form around your feet.
  • See an Opera at the Opera House . .
  • On the , right opposite the , is a fruit and vegetable open-air market where small farmers from the countryside around Graz bring their produce for sale (or rather their wives do). Morning only. The other main farmers market in Graz is located on the "Lendplatz". Morning only.
  • During the summer months, in the city centre between the and the , along the , you may be fortunate enough to come across musicians of all sorts. Perhaps a small quartet playing Mozart. Perhaps a barrel-organ.
  • Football at the , the home of Sturm Graz and Grazer AK in the district of Liebenau, south of the city centre. Ticket prices from 22 to 36.50 Euros.

BIX Façade

BIX Façade
Made by ╬Thomas Reichart ╬
BIX Façade Kunsthaus Graz (Graz Art Museum) The BIX Façade of the museum represents a singular fusion from architecture and New Media and is based on a concept of the Berliner architects realities:united. BIX, a name which consists of the words Big and pixels is the acrylic glass skin of the eastern side of the building toward the Mur and city center and represents an oversize urban screen, which serves as an instrument for artistic productions. BIX projects accompany different exhibitions and are not transported into the public area, also the direct environment is defined and shaped. Beyond that the communicating outer skin offers also a possible drilling platform for art projects, which bring up for discussion the dialogue between media and area. 930 40 Watt fluorescent rings are embedded in the 900 m² outer skin, with the illumination level of each one being steplessly variable between 0 and 100%. Each light ring functions as pixel, which can be served by a central computer. In this way they can be developed as roughly screened indications, texts and film sequences, which radiate far into the urban area and thus, the blue blister of Graz with a screen of immense size makes an art gallery. Island in the Mur - Graz

Island in the Mur - Graz
Made by ╬Thomas Reichart ╬
The New York artist and designer Vito Acconci has made a spectacular new space above the river Mur on the basis of an idea by Robert Punkenhofer, himself a Graz man. In a shell form lies an amphitheatre and under a curvaceous dome, as the artist calls it, is a cafe. Conceived as a meeting place for young and old, it holds a cafe, an amphitheater and a playground. This town's landmark offers its whole beauty especially during darkness when it is illuminated with blue light. I tried to enhance this effect by doing a DRI (dynamic range increase) by exposure blending. So three pictures where superimopsed. As it was one of my first trials I switched the aperture, now knowing that is makes of course more sense to keep it constant and change the time of exposure: Canon PowerShot G3 Aufnahmedatum/-zeit: 22.02.2007 22:28 Aufnahmemodus: Tv (Blendenautomatik) well exposed Tv (Verschlusszeit): 10 Av (Blendenzahl): 6.3 underexposed Tv (Verschlusszeit): 10 Av (Blendenzahl): 8.0 overexposed Tv (Verschlusszeit): 10 Av (Blendenzahl): 3.2

Kunsthaus - Graz (Graz Art Museum) was built as part of the European Capital of Culture celebrations in 2003 and has since become an architectural landmark in Graz, Austria. Its unusual architecture differs radically from conventional buildings, many of which maintain the traditions of the modernist White Cube. The team of architects used an innovative stylistic idiom, known as blob architecture within the historical ambiance of the Murvorstadt. Thus, the gigantic building called the Friendly Alien by its creators Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, in form and material, stands out against the surrounding baroque roof landscape with its red clay roofing tiles but nevertheless integrates the façade of the 1847 iron house. The picture was taken from the castle mountain (Burgberg). This landmark of Graz was constructed by New York artist and designer Vito Acconci on the occasion of Graz becoming the 2003 European Capital of Culture. The building in the form of a giant sea shell measures 50 m in length and 20 m in width. Two footbridges (the end of one you can see in this image) connect it with both banks of the Mur. Graz was founded at the spot where the river Mur (see also Murradweg) flows into a wide plain, after flowing down from a hilly, narrow region. The city's past and present development was significantly influenced by the area's existing geological and geographical features. The River Mur, which flows from north to south cuts the city in half, and hilly regions flank the north, east and west of the city. The Schlossberg mountain in the city centre is only a short distance away from the river.

Second choice. Being in Graz you have normally two different choices of places to go to if you want to play pool or darts. One of them is the Brot & Spiele, the other is this, the Cafe Immervoll. Both awesome places for pub games, but the Brot & Spiele scores with awesome food. Burgers, ribs, steaks, salads or sandwiches. The downside of the Brot & Spiele is, that it is mostly crowded. Thats why I went to the Cafe Immervoll this evening in january with my girlfried for some pool games. camera: Rollei Rolleicord III - Model K3B lens: Schneider Xenar 75mm f/3.5 film: Ilford HP5 Plus 400ASA exposure time: 12 sec aperture: f/22 scan: CanoScan 8400 & SilverFast SE

I've always wanted a photo like this and today - just out of nowhere we went to Schloss Eggenberg in my city, Graz - which has been listed as a UNESCO heritage site last year. In the gardens there are quite some peacocks running around and luckily two of them spread their feathers and showed off their beauty turning from one side to the other. I love them!!!
