Granville Street Bridge, Vancouver
Made by Thad Roan - Bridgepix
HDR image reprocessed from a photo taken in July, 2007 of the Granville Street Bridge, Vancouver, Canada. The bridge is reflecting the setting sun. Additional Bridge Photos and a Bridge Blog at www.Bridgepix.com. The Granville Street Bridge is an eight lane bridge in Vancouver, British Columbia. It spans 27.4 metres above False Creek and Granville Island. It is part of BC Highway 99. The original bridge was completed in 1889. It was a 732-metre long low timber trestle. The navigation span, near the north end, was a trussed timber swing span, tied with wire ropes to a central wooden tower. It was largely designed by the CPR, and cost $16,000. In 1891 the bridge was widened on both sides for streetcar tracks, except where the tracks converged for the swing span. The second bridge was completed in 1909. It was a longer, medium-level steel bridge with a through truss swing span. On February 4, 1954, the current Granville Street Bridge, costing $16.5 million, opened. A million cars would cross over the bridge in its first month. The city of Vancouver funded the bridge itself as Mayor Frederick Hume said no formal assistance given by any other government body. It was once the widest bridge in North America — by 1 centimetre. The eight-lane structure was constructed on the same alignment as the first bridge while steel plate girders salvaged from the second bridge made barges for constructing the foundations of the Oak Street Bridge. The first “civilian” to drive over the 1954 bridge was the same woman who was first to drive over the second bridge in 1909. She had been widowed in between the two openings, and so had a different name. Both times she was at the wheel of a brand-new Cadillac. Recent improvements to the bridge include increasing its earthquake resistance, and installing higher curbs and median barriers. (Wikipedia)

003/100 One Hundred Strangers Project My dear auntie took the cousins and I for an outing together on a beautiful sunny day to Granville Island while visiting over the summer. We perused through the market, shooting and bokeh-ing all the pretty foods. On our way out, we decided to sit and take a minute on a bench to just people-watch and listen to the live music. As we all were sitting and absorbing the easygoing summer vibe, this one girl across the street caught my attention. She was swaying and bopping to the music, dressed in a lovely summer dress with her bouncy blond curls catching the sunlight. One affirming look at my cousin and I knew she'd be a great subject for the project. So with more encouragement (I remember one of my cousin's saying, why be shy? we all end up dying anyway ....a comment that didn't necessarily make me feel good, but did loosen me up. :P), I crossed the street and made my move. I told Chloe about the Project and she immediately was game! She was so excited and sweet about it. Is she not just adorable? Her personality was just as delightful. Thank you, Chloe, for being a part of my 100 Strangers Project. www.100strangers.com/

Starling likes donuts
Made by Eric Flexyourhead
It wasn't until I unloaded the camera and saw the splashes of colours in this starling's wings and breast feathers that I realized they weren't as drab and boring as I had previously thought. And this guy had real character and wasn't the least bit concerned about having the Zuiko Digital 12-60mm 25 cm away from him. Of course, the fact that he was waiting for crumbs from my Chocolate Mint donut from Granville Island may have had something to do with that. November 22, 2008. Anyhow, Mari has put her from our Saturday morning Granville Island visit up on her Flickr stream and Fred has responded with a shot of a starling that used to frequent the food court at International Village, so I figured it was my turn to have some starling action in my Flickr stream too.

Beauty in blue
Made by Eric Flexyourhead
Unless something else jumps out of the archives one day down the road (or I pick up one of my own), this is probably the last upload from my weekend test-run with the new Olympus m.Zuiko Digital 45mm f/1.8. My verdict after a few days with this lens? Along with the Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 pancake, the Olympus 45mm f/1.8 is officially a must-have lens for any micro Four Thirds shooter. The lens is wonderfully sharp, even wide open, and the bokeh is superb too... a solid performer all around, especially considering the price of ownership. If you don't have this lens on your wish list, it's time to re-evaluate and add it ASAP. And, once again, huge thanks to for the extended play time with the lens before he even took it home himself! Moments
Made by ng.kelven
One of my favorite advertisements was one by Lexus which focused on the moments. It is the moments that we most appreciate. Whether big or small, what we truly remember are those moments. Everything else that happens in between can be a moment too but for the most part it is just a filling. Something to take up the rest of our time. Because at the end of the day, memories are made of these moments. Photography is just like that don't you think? Everyone has their definition of what a good photo is. Some of the best photos that I have ever seen though has to be those that capture a moment in time that you may never see again. Something emotive, though provoking, and dramatic. The goal is to keep striving for those kinds of pictures so I'll just have to keep shooting :)

day one of Thirty Days of Vancouver, BC Autumn This is a project I have had in mind for some time. Today it commences and I think I have finally got it under way. Each new day will reward the viewer with a new photo; a new moment in the quick-changing world of autumn. It is my favourite season and an obvious choice as a beginning. It is the start of my personal year; a true autumn baby. Today is October 15th: Day One. --------- At the end I hope to be able to offer a limited edition handmade book of all the prints, and also a less-expensive professionally produced photobook. Research is currently being undertaken to discover the best ways to offer this to my audience. More information will follow. For now, enjoy the photos.

196/365 - Granville Bridge West View
Made by 水 Stormchild
18-photo panorama, stitched with Hugin using equirectangular Panini projection. All photos taken in portrait orientation @ 18mm, ƒ10, 1/160 shutter. FoV: 210° horizontal, 92° vertical. This panorama required a fair bit of manual work in Photoshop, particularly for correcting the bridge railing at both ends (parallax movement — a result of not using a tripod with a panoramic head). You can see the problem in the initial stitch, along with a large chunk of missing sky due to the way the images are projected…check the first comment. Of course, the bridge is actually straight; this is a much wider field of view than you would naturally see. The full size panorama is 7310 × 2601 (19 Mpx).

Granville Island, Vancouver BC
Made by Gladwin Johnson
Hi Folks, I know most of you must be wondering what happened to me since I have been away for a long time. I had to move to Vancouver BC last month and the move had kept me busy for a while. First, my apologies for not keeping you all informed about this move and then another apology for not keeping track of your awesome work. Now here I am from a new place but still in the Pacific NW region. I will soon catch up with all the fun stuff that I lost in the past 1 month. And I hope you all have been doing good. I have a few emails from you all, I will send replies to them soon. Thanks for your support.

Orange flowers
Made by elementalPaul
Not an HDR but a tone mapped image from a single RAW. I took this at Granville Island Public Market in Vancouver. The position of these flowers and the amount of people walking past meant it was difficult to stay in one spot to take all the exposures I needed for an HDR. My camera has a handy RAW button which lets me switch straight to RAW mode without any fuss or bother so I decided to take advantage of it. I did a little Photoshop manipulation on this too but hopefully I've managed to keep it fairly subtle. I should do these more often as I think this has turned out rather well :-)

part of my 100 strangers project (7 of 100) Amanda was the last of my strangers in Vancouver. By the time I encountered her I was pretty courageous. I asked my family to wait for me and approached her at the counter. When I described the 100 Strangers Project to her, she seemed surprised that I wanted to take her photo. Have a look for yourself, Amanda, you're actually quite photogenic! Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.100strangers.com

Self-Portrait as a Vancouver Photographer (after Wall)
Made by grahamcase
Final project for my colour class. I'm referencing this photo by Jeff Wall. I'm not going to get into into the motivation, but I'll just say that I am almost 100% happy with the result (there is that unfortunate crop of me on the right hand side caused by an accidental slight turn of the view-camera that I didn't know happened...) Done in the studio with a single large softbox above the camera.

You could easily imagine that the downtown core of Vancouver has simply run out of space for new buildings. But you'd be wrong. There are more construction cranes around than ever - it seems anyway. There are none visible in this shot but if I were to pan the camera right so that is was looking north east, you would see a forest of cranes. Fuji Velvia 100, scanned, colour corrected, sharpened in Photoshop CS3. www.tripleman.com

This is one of the buildings of the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Granville Island, Vancouver BC. It is often an attraction for photographers I guess because of the interesting architecture. I took snaps when we visited last week to buy some canvass from an art shop next to the university. It makes for some good sliding and I really enjoyed it :). Emily Carr Wiki

Taken at Granville Island Public Market in Vancouver. The website for the market states: The Granville Island Public Market is Vancouver’s hub of epicurean delight! If you get the chance to go to Vancouver then Granville Island is well worth a visit. The alignment is a bit off on this one too so sorry about that! For your enhanced viewing pleasure :-)

Too many cakes to choose from?

Special thanks to for giving me a quick test drive with his Olympus Zuiko Digital 8mm fisheye! I originally tried this lens at Olympus Plaza in Osaka and really wanted one... now I probably want one even more. Too many lenses, so little time. (And never enough money! Hahaha!) When the sun shines in Vancouver in the winter, you take advantage of the opportunity to get outside without needing to carry and umbrella. So, and I went out wandering, walking south on the Burrard Street Bridge, through Kitsilano, and then back downtown over the Granville Street Bridge. One afternoon, two bridges. January 9, 2011.

Mari and I visited Granville Island with Yumiko-san and her husband. I'm used to shopping here at 9:00 am on a Saturday or Sunday morning... it's much busier visiting the market on a sunny Saturday afternoon! Granville Island Public Market, Vancouver. August 6, 2011.

Burrard Bridge from Granville Island, Vancouver, BC, Canada Supplemental: The outside was really this colour at that evening. I just developed this jpeg image from a RAW image by using OLYMPUS Master 2 without any effects. This Olympus E-P1 itself has image effects but I didn't use that and also any filters. I was so impressed when I saw this scenery:) And it was raining.
