Crosswalk

Crosswalks are very telling things about people in cities. They are a good barometer of the nature of a city. In Montreal crosswalks are not respected at all. In fact I'd almost say they are meaningless. People cross the streets anywhere at anytime and with indignation towards the on coming traffic and drivers could care less if people are on them or not. They don't stop to let people pass if anything they even speed up to make sure you don't get in their way. In Madrid it's very different. Although in this picture some people are crossing on red most everyone I saw respects the crosswalks and the lights and you even see it here in this picture where most people are still standing and waiting.. They are often placed back away from the actual street corner and people will go to them to cross. The lights all have the beeping tones for the deaf and are guaged to change sound and the speed of the flashing green when they are nearing a change to red. People also generally don't cross when it's red and there are no cars... of course not everyone but to a Montrealer this is mind boggling that even some people think to do this. I had to stop myself all the time and wait.... it was a very difficult for me to do because the urge to cross is an automatic one I never think about so the temptation to just cross the street anywhere took over on a few occasions LOL... In short they seemed like people who were both rushed like any other big city but sophisticated enough to know that some pedestrian dicipline only makes sense and keeps the city civilized and managable for pedestrians and drivers alike. We could learn a lot from them.

A nice view of the Gran Via and all the activity on it... It was very much like being in New York or London or Paris.. nonstop people and cars, plenty of shops and impressive buildings all around you.

Great band, energy and social skills to get euros. These guys play that great type adriatic music that was made popular by Emir Kusturica and friends.

The Madrid Metro sign is similar to London's... Callao Metro on the Gran Via... daily life passes by here in the movie and theatre district of Madrid.
